Résumé

Just wanted to post this poem I came across recently because it's totally cool. I suppose this might be copyrighted material, but you can find it online just about anywhere, so I'm guessing it's safe to post it here.

Résumé (by Dorothy Parker)
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.

I suppose that's artistic in some way.

Anyway, it holds my attention about as long as it took to write it (not including the time spent thinking about wording).

At least it isn't Tide. Otherwise we may have a screwed-up Cazor on our hands.

Try harder next time... I mean its good but more effort would produce less childish work.

Dude.

I didn't write the poem. It was written by Dorothy Parker who was considered by many to have been one of the greatest female poets of her day (1920's and 30's was when she published mostly), and has been published in plenty of anthologies since. So eat your foot. You're obviously not a very good poetry critic.

Furthermore, it's discussing the very serious issue of suicide. Just because it does so with an ironic, homorous tone doesn't make it childish.

Heh.. I thought it was dealing with the pains of writing a resume/trying to get hired etc. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif] It sounds about right for that. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

On that subject:

Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The irony lies in indirection, as it offers unexpected and ultimately despairing reasons for avoiding suicide and continuing to live, and in the ambiguity of the title: the word resume, without accents, means to "go on again, after an interruption; to continue," all of which is appropriate to the poem. Resume, with accents, means a "summary," particularly "a brief account of personal qualifications and experience," as if the poem summarizes the speaker's experiences and qualifications in this area (the speaker has tried them all and knows!).</font>
(Dorothy did in fact try to commit suicide)

Why is it that the explanation is longer than the poem itself? heh

I once saw a book called "Understand To Kill a Mockingbird" and it was like twice as thick as the book

Well, as far as poetry goes, it's designed to be dense while essays are designed to take up as much space as possible. Creative Writers are a lot better at using very few words to convey a lot of meaning.

lat, Sarn ran out of time to run it. Plus Sarn was not really getting enough submissions to be able to run it effectively. Sarn plans on getting it up and running again eventually, but it may not be for another year or so. However, when Sarn does get it up and running again, Sarn will tell everyone here.

Furthermore, Sarn has come into this strange habit recently of referring to himself in the third person.
