Picking the right hardware

Alright, my plans are to slowly upgrade starting in around half a year. maybe more, maybe buy a few things earlier then that.

I have a nice PC, but I want to upgrade it into something really good.

2.4 Athlon equiviliant, or a 64-bit athlon?

Radeon 9700 or 9800? Is 64-bit really worth it?

What speed DDR RAM Should I get?

If anyone could help, it would be good.

1.4 GHZ Athlon. some other junk, rad 8500, gotta go. thanks.

I'd go higher than a 2.4 if you can affoard it. Faster RAM = better RAM
Either video card will due, but the 9800 is obviously a stronger, faster card
Might need a new mobo, depends on what speed RAM and processor it can handle.

The 64-Bit AMD processor is crazy fast. It's even faster than the newest Pentium 4 Extreme edition, which was meant to compete with the AMD64 processor. The AMD64 3200+ is even faster than the P4 EE 3.4ghz, even though its 200mhz slower.

Yea, its definately worth it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Actually, the AMD64 3200+ does not clock in at 3.2Ghz. For some reasons, that's the way AMD model numbers go. An AMD Athlon XP 2500+ doesn't clock in at 2.5Ghz it's 1.83Ghz.

The AMD64 3200+ Runs at 2Ghz, but it has hella lot of L2 Cache. But yes, the fact remains that it does run faster than a P4 EE 3.4Ghz, which is just amazing.

I bet with the mobo you have you won't be able to use 64 bit CPUs. If your mobo is still older, you won't even be able to use 8x AGP speed for the Radeon card.
Post your specs for your current computer so we can help.

Thats what I'm saying, the Mobo gets kicked out, too.

1.4 GHZ Athlon something or other, ASUS Something or other (2 DDR RAM slots, Uhh, AGP 4X max.)

DVD-ROM, CDRW.

With what you guys have said, I think I'll probably go with a 64-bit. Seems to be worth it, even if I have to wait intill I can buy a 64-bit compatible mobo.

Thanks for helping me out.

I wouldn't upgrade yet. You still have a good system. I built a whole new computer from scratch with top of the line parts, and let me tell you that I wish I held off until the release of Half Life 2 and Doom 3... why get hardware you won't be using right away?
