I wonder about microsoft recently.. All these security holes and now this. What are they trying to do? Lower the share price or something?

Maybe they did it on purpose, and they want to get people to fix it, then they use that code and say there was a major breakthrough. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Anyway, I've been wondering recently how this has never happened before. Guess now it has.

You're probably right. Though I don't know, if a group of people start working on it, think of how embarassing the list would be.

(it would be long!)

I was thinking, this is great.. You know, we can all finally pick through it and see if all the rumors of spying and reporting components are true... But then it dawned on me, what if Microsoft rolled together a limited version of the code that doesnt include all the increminating code, and purposefully released it?

Its just a filelist. A file list. Its not the source. It does, however, indicate the leak is valid.

MBeggar, he says "exactly" meaning he doesn't know if it's a full leak. He is suggesting that it's only a partial leak.

The Windows source is made up of tons of modules that are fairly separate from each other and from what I understand, very few people have access to all of the code.

Or so I've been told by someone I know who is part of the Windows dev team.

Not to mention that I've yet to see any actual evidence of such a leak. If anything, it's probably a few modules maybe, but it's very unlikely that it's the whole thing.
2004-02-12, 5:29 PM #27
full leak or not, you can bet now that Microsoft will be downloading Linux more than anybody else out there hunting for an SCO claim. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

No serious OSS developer would dare use *any* code from Windows. THink of the instabilities it would introduce!

Looks like it's only a portion of the code. Over at neowin people have been saying the entire source code is several GB's, and the leaked 2k source code is only totaling 194mb.

[edit2]
Another guy over at neowin says "It's some really integral parts of the Windows 2000 Source Code, about 1.7% of the total code, but very prior parts (kernel, task manager, modules, shell, driver interface, ie)."

[edit3]
From BetaNews -

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The claimed Windows 2000 source code archive contains 30,915 files totaling approximately 13.5 million lines. The source is dated July 25, 2000, placing it after the official release of the operating system, which was rumored to contain between 35 and 50 million lines of code in its entirety.</font>

it's already been stated on /. that it's quite a humongous amount of code. Compression is high..

Not really. Source code is all plain text, and plain text compresses nicely.

I compressed over 190mb of JED backup files down to a 1mb once. I used 7z, not zip, but the principle is the same.

yeah, you have to consider that all the zipper is doing is removing empty space. So within a text file, anything white gets scrunched down. With multiple gigs of text, all of the formatting and spacing and all the separate lines of code to make it legible to the coding staff (which from what I've read from some of the grebs can't read the damn code anyways) get discarded. From ZDNet -
Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The 203MB file expands to just under 660MB, he said, noting that the final code size almost perfectly matches the capacity of a typical CD-ROM. The entire source code, he said, is believed to be about 40GB, meaning that the file circulating Thursday is only a fraction of the full code base.

"It looks real," he said. "You can't build Windows, however. It's just a bunch of chunks of the operating system."</font>

True, but better compression schemes will also search out patterns to compress it further... For instance, you gotta know most of the code in Windows consists of "if(in_use) CauseCrash()".... These patterns can be removed, saving space. LOTS of space.

Well, judging from the file list GBK posted, which I didn't notice earlier, it looks like many of the windows apps could be built from this. Also some of the info here might help the development of WINE... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Good, helps WINE
Bad, helps hackers
Ugly, I can just see it now, all the notepad and mspaint clones/mods... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Please, oh please, tell me that was a joke... You don't need the source code of an operating system to make MSPaint, and certainly not Notepad.
