MP3 -> OGG converter

Anyone know where I can find a program to convert some MP3s into OGGs? Thanks alot in advance.

Note: Google turn up nothing but expensive ripping programs.

You don't want to do that, it decreases quality

(not because vorbis is notably worse but because both compression methods are lossy)

Well, at least Ï've been able to convert MP3's to OGG's very properly with GoldWave.

Thanks FastGamerr. Goldwave works very well, but I'm finding it tedious to convert multiple mp3s at once. Is there a quick way of doing it?

Yes, on Goldwave, go to the 'File'-menu and choose 'Batch Conversion'. Choose the mp3's, and change the File Type to Ogg in the Destination Settings.

I'm glad I'm helpful. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Why? Converting them to Vorbis will solve nothing - it will infact decrease the quality.

Both Vorbis and Mp3 are lossy - just Vorbis is alot more sneaky about it. ALOT more sneaky. But, if you combine Vorbis' compression with Mp3's compression, it sounds bad.
If your ripping from the source (wav, CD), definatly rip to Vorbis. Otherwise, leave it as is....

Why do you intend to transcode?
It certainly is not for use in portables, or?

This is useful for me, I convet my 192-320k MP3s down to 96k OGG Vorbis to listen to them on my PDA. When I'm using the little ear buds I carry around with my PDA I hardly notice the quality loss, and it allows me to store as much as 4 times more music on the 128mb CF card.

It's so I can use them for the in-game music player in UT2K4. It seems to maintain its quality when I convert it.

Thanks alot FastGamerr, I really appreciate it [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

You can convert to and from any file format you will need.

Yeah, what Zul said. Use the "dbPower AMP Music Converter." It doesn't have the best interface, but it works. I use it to convert 128kbps MP3s to q0 (~64kbps) Oggs for my PDA. They sound good, and they take up half the space, so twice as much music on the memory cards.

Just go out and get the official OGG tools from Xiph.org. Its not hard to write a script to convert entire directories of mp3s to Vorbis with them.
