From correspondents in Lahore
February 16, 2004

SEVEN people were killed and more than 100 injured in Pakistan during the annual kite flying festival marking the arrival of spring, officials said today.

An 18-month-old girl's throat was cut by a stray kite string while she was travelling with her parents on a motorbike, witnesses said, adding that she died on the spot.

Three people were electrocuted when metal wires they were using to fly or catch stray kites fell on live electric lines, and two people fell from roofs, hospital officials said.

A 12-year-old boy died while trying to catch a stray kite when he was hit by a car on a main road, police said.

More than 100 people had been reported injured since last night in various kite-related accidents, medical workers said.

Officials at Lahore's Mayo Hospital said 42 children and 60 adults had been treated for injuries.

"One child was injured by a stray bullet," deputy medical superintendent Dr Saqib Shafi told AFP.

Though firing guns is banned, people celebrate the spring festival by firing into the air, often causing casualties.

Relatives of people killed or injured in kite flying accidents held a demonstration in Lahore last year urging the government to maintain its ban on selling and flying kites.

More than 20 people have been killed in kite flying accidents in Lahore since last year's spring festival.

Casualties and frequent power outages caused by metal wires falling over power lines forced the government to ban the sale of kites and metal wire, but those restrictions were lifted this month to celebrate the festival, officials said.

Holy crap [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif]

I'd be hold demonstrations urging the government to maintain citizen common sense rather than a ban on kites...

What in the world!? Those people must be serioulsy stupid. I've never heard of anyone in any other countries managing to kill themselves with kites. Whatever gathering that was sounds like a deathtrap.

As sad as that is, it is also pretty funny. It sounds so chaotic with people dying in some many ways. Stray bullets, electrical wires, car crashes, etc.

With the exception of the girl who's throat was cut, the deaths and injuries appear to be due to shear stupidity. And hers was more than likely due to somebody else being a moron.

B.S. The probability of a bullet striking someone fatally when fired in such a fashion is *incredibly* low.

Not really. It's the conservation of energy. If you fire a bullet straight up in the air, it'll have roughly the same potential energy at its apex as it did kinetic energy at the end of the gun barrel. Firing a gun into the air is basically like shooting at yourself from a couple of miles away.

Wasn't there a major news article a while ago about some kid at a KKK meeting having a bullet pass through the top of his head and out the bottom, because they were shooting guns in the air?

Casualty refers to injuries and deaths, no just deaths

There are many reports of casualties in the middle east when a wedding is held in a village, fully automatic rifles are fired into the air, and people in neighboring villages are hit.

Imagine that, what goes up must come down.

It's also been known to happen in large crowded celebrations when people fire guns in the air. When you pack a lot of people together your odds of hitting somebody when the round comes back down go way up.

That was incredibly stupid. Metal wire + power lines + ground = zaparoo.
