Mac Vs PC - Calling all Mac and PC users!

Both me and my dad are after laptops. I want one that'll be able to run games while my dad just wants one to display images and play music.

What are the differences between a PC laptop and an Apple Mac iBook/PowerBook.

Also what are the differences between a standard PC and an AppleMac.

I'm assuming the Apple Mac will be best for images but which will be best for games.

My dad's not likely to spend more than £500 while I'm willing to go to £1500. Will this make any difference?

No silly remarks about the shape or colour thank you very much :P
2004-02-16, 6:12 AM #2
Well. Overall Macs are sexier.

The question should be, Can your dad get an iBook for 500?

Explain to me how exactly one can be superior for displaying images and movies.

For manipulating images/movies, yes, there may be a difference there. But still I think that's debatable...

As for games, I think PC is the only way to go.

For games you only have one choice. PC.
If your dad wants to manipulate and work with images and movies, then MAC is the way to go for a couple of reasons. If he is only looking at images and movies then it doesn't matter which way he goes.
Now for price. Your dad may be able to get a 5 year old MAC for 500 but what would be the point of that. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

That had to be the dumbest things I've ever watched. Most of the latest and greatest games are made for the mac os.

I do believe the only funny bit is that it's formatted in Quicktime, AN APPLE PRODUCT!

you won't be getting a brand new Apple for £500 [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]
but you can check all sorts of other sites for the older iBooks (and even PowerBooks)

i paid $1,500 (usd) for my PowerBook G4 12" brand new from apple.com (educational discount)
it was DEFINETELY worth it

if there were any Apple stores in the UK i'd say go there and have your dad try one out but since the only Apple stores are in the US and Ginza you're stuck (=

if you know anyone who has an OS X machine have your dad go try it out... you DEFINETELY want at least Jaguar (10.2) but preferably Panther (10.3)

as for PC laptops all i have to say is this: friends don't let friends buy Compaq (or HP)
try Dell or Alienware. nice stuff but not too expensive [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

edit:
Schming... yeah, that's the point. he's making a JOKE about a product he uses (=

Either would suffice.

For me, Id problably go with a high-end PC laptop, merely because I dont want to have to recompile everything to work on the PPC chip.

I'm a die-hard Pc user, but i'm willing to credit macs with this:

Overall, macs have the best quality parts that i've ever seen. A friend of mine took his old G3 apart, and I've never seen a better built comp. Even the case looked much more durable than any PC case that I've seen. This sharply contrasts with the cheapo pcs on the market that have sub-standard parts.

Is_907, their's an Apple store in Leeds (UK), only 20min train ride from where we live. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

My dad is likely to buy a secound hand one anyway, he doesen't see the point of buying new despite the fact I keep warning him that alot of new programs won't work without major driver updates. He bought a secound hand printer because it was cheap, it took me two weeks to find a local shop that had a cartridge in stock!
He will be doing some image editing (he's no good at it though [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]).

Pagewizard has a valid point. Although that's most retail PCs, it's not like there aren't built to order PCs like Alienware or Falcon Northwest that are well built. The new Alienware case seems pretty indestructable. Maybe it's because it's a well made case, or maybe it's just because it's so big that you can't ever get it moving enough to the point where it could be damaged...or both.

Despite Macs being well made, it's pretty lame that you only get one external drive bay. And me, well personally I like buttons on my case...

Dude, Compaq is a complete joke. Stop buying their computers. Anything will look well-built when compared to a Compaq.

Take apart an iMac (The monitors with a CDROM drive [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]) and tell me they are well built. They cram everything in such a tight space, that it is humanly impossible to replace anything more than ram. God help you if you need to replace the power supply.

And Compaqs aren't exactly a great comparison either. I think the iMac was based off of them [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Macs aren't as "special" as they used to be. Sure, they used to be immensely popular for graphics and video. But many of the software companies are moving away from the Macs now. For example, you can no longer find Adobe Premiere, a video editing program, on the Mac. Adobe Premiere is a very, very, very popular video editing program, with features and capabilities out the wazoo.

iMovie is a POS as far as I'm concerned. It is ONLY useful for making .mov files. It completely sucks at making MPEGS, and especially AVIs.

And for games, you'll have to get a PC. The support and gaming just isn't there for Macs.

It's been said, and I'll re-say it.

For games, go PC. I've no idea what brad becuase I don't ever really look at laptops.

For image/movie/music editing I'd go Mac. iMovie is an incredible product for people who just want to dabble in movie making. Same goes for Soundtrack and GarageBand (music editors/makers), both of which I've played with recently.

For image/movie/music viewing or listening it's a toss up.

I think that covers it. But if you go Mac, definately get one that runs OS X.

(Last I knew), Mac uses a different file system. That means the majority of files you have for PC will not work on a Mac, unless you have programs to convert. If you already have a PC, you'd be better off to get a PC notebook. If you have Mac, get a Mac notebook. If you have both, well... get both. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Cheaply built PCs... Yeah, if they're prebuilt...

Even though I don't really like Macos that much either, it is rock-solid in terms of stability compared to windows.

I wouldn't know how it compares stability wise to linux, but against a consumer-grade PC with winxp, there's no contest.

at ths point, all that I really have against macs is that stupid round mouse that they released a few years back. (They redeemed themselves in that aspect by dropping the design and most new macs have a standard-shaped mouse with a laser-tracking thing instead of a mouse ball. it looks really cool and it actually fits my hand.)

Apple makes a great product, but I do think that it is a tad overpriced, even though it is higher quality in terms of hardware than the average PC. If they went on sale and there was some sort of emulator that would let me run my windows apps, I would definitely give apple a consideration.

Emulator?

Try Virtual PC. Mind you it's best for aps, not games.

My point exactly, It's game support that i'm expressly looking for.

the only other alternative would be to buy macos versions of the games that i already own , or more likely, find DEViANCE, iMMERSION or Fairlight rips of everything i own already but for macOs. (Razor1911 used to be good, but the feds shut them down. )
