Meh, ads are hosted from OSDN, which, sadly, hosts MS ads. I dont know why, and it bugs me too, but its true. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

That's sad... I hate banner ads... I'm glad Massassi simply has them limited to "Recon Gamer"... Banner services always suck... Though they're not as bad as pop-ups/pop-unders, Java/Flash floaters, and bombardment worms (which should be illegal by now).

Well you need pop-ups for free internet browsing unless you wanna pay for every site you vist.

Ads and companies keep service costs down. I know it maybe annoying and I'm not advocating those stupid porno pop-ups but pop-ups in their place do serve for the greater good.

My site has no popups and never will. And my site has, to this day, not cost me a flat penny.

Technically yes you are paying, because its your ISP. And you're also breaking their TOS.

Woo. If people visited your website, you'd see that your bandwidth wasn't high enough, and that.. yes... it would cost you quite a bit more than a penny.

Actully, no. The TOS mentions nothing about serving data... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Pop-ups are only parts of the "TOS" document for crappier web hosts. Most realize that they can simply get by with only banner ads. Massassi has no po-ups, or at least, I've found none yet.

A friend of mine recently started his own site. There are about 30 of us who visit it regularly, all of us know each other in real life.

His site currently uses up about 3 GB a month, and all it serves is a forum and a few of his rants.

So, yes, a real site costs quite a bit if more than a few people visit it, GBK.

Window.Open() is not bad in itself. The implementation of it for advertisement is. There are legitimate uses for the method.

When only a handful of people visit it every now and then you can have that luxury. If your site had a lot of content and was popular you'd have to face the same realities others do.

So I'm not sure why it's something to toot your horn about since there's no reason you'd need ad revenue.

To almost completely change the subject (and hopefully the growing anti-GBK sentiment), I heard somewhere that one of Microsoft's distribution centers or something like that used Linux servers. Can anyone find a link supporting this rumor?

Oh, and a question to Mad Cow: shouldn't it be "vache folle" or something like that?

Hotmail runs on BSD. This has always been a minor source of embarassment for Microsoft. I think a few of their other servers, like Windows Update, also run on BSD.

Microsoft has never and will never use Linux. Microsoft has always been totally anti-Linux. The only operating systems they officially support outside of Windows is UNIX (they also used to port software to MacOS, but since it pretty much became a BSD distribution it doesn't count anymore).

If they use any non-Microsoft OS, it's going to be a UNIX.

Of course. Im not an idiot. But a site needs not a large volume of traffic to be deemed 'real'.

Yeah, that's right [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] I forgot that I was using Windows in french.

And while people are talking about linux, I just tried out Slax, and am loving it. It's really nice to boot to a perfectly clean to computer without having to format and reinstall everything...

Yeah I've heard about Knoppix, that's what got me looking around for linux live cd's. I'll get around to trying Knoppix also, but for now, I'm really liking Slax. It runs a hell of a lot faster than Mandrake does on my comp, and from a cd instead of the hard drive...
