QuickTime becomes iTunes

Try to download the QuickTime installer. Has anyone else noticed it's actually iTunes?

Yes. I wasn't too happy about it at first but went through with it anyways.
It's ok. I kinda like the iTunes player.

That just makes me hate Apple even more. Thank God I dont need to use their &^%$R^%%(*% product to view Quicktime files anymore.

Indeed. I use MediaPlayer Clasic for everything. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Ah the good old days when WMP would play .mov .rm .ram .mpg .avi etc. Such a wonderful find. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

MPC? Pfft. MPlayer is better. Or AVIfile. Or Xine. Or VideoLan...

How big are they all?
MPC is 0,98MB

MPlayer is excellent. I haven't used AVIfile or VideoLan, but Xine is a pathetic peice of junk.

AVIfile is sweet. I use its 'avirec' as the base of my PVRs. ..And yeah, sadly, Xine does suck. Its DVD and VCD playback is ok, but its codec support is somewhat lacking.

MPC's filesize may be 0.98mb, but whats its memory footprint? How many libraries does it pull from? How much system resources does it use up?

aviplay AVIfile's playback utility) is 233602 bytes. (somewhere around 0.2MB)

avirec AVIfile's recording utility) is only 123601 bytes. (somewhere around 0.1MB) This is compared to several hundred megabytes for the popular Windows PVR utilities....

The only thing I wish I could do is browse and share my music on the iTunes network in my dorm. I don't exactly want to try to get iTunes to run in Wine, and I don't know of any other options. Do you possibly know of any Linux program that can do it?
2004-02-16, 10:01 AM #14
VLC crashed once during my quick test and wouldn't seek properly and memory usage was higher than MPC (9mb vs 8mb idle, 20mb vs 12mb working)

huh?
oh well, doesn't bother me since iTunes and QuickTime are both preinstalled and run fine on OS X [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

(seriously, QuickTime in OS X runs SO smoothly compared to the windows version)

*huggles iTunes*

I've never seen Quicktime run choppily. Not even on a Pentium 2.
2004-02-16, 10:32 AM #18
Even with it's limitations, I really like quicktime.

MPlayer...Win 32? I have to look into that.

And GBK, how is memory so relevant? Oh no, MPC is taking up 8 MB of my 768 MB of RAM! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

Before we going flaming Apple, lets actually READ the download options.

Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
Download the free player
Select your operating system:
Mac OS X v10.2.5-10.3.x
Mac OS 8.6/9
Win 98/Me/2000/XP
QuickTime and iTunes for Windows 2000/XP
</font>

Take note of the third one down. "Win 98/Me/2000/XP" should give you ONLY QuickTime, whereas "QuickTime and iTunes for Windows 2000/XP" is giving you EXACTLY what it says.

They are BOTH seperate files. However, iTunes DOES require QuickTime (I think it's 6, not sure) to be installed (I believe that is just for visualizations, again, not sure).

I suspect a bit of reading may solve your problem.

How is it tricky?

If you just quickly scroll through a page and look for the download button and don't read, yes, you will get things you may not want.

Besides, Apple has pretty much always given you an options list when it comes to downloads, why should QuickTime be different?

It's tricky because I clicked on the "QuickTime" tab not a "QuickTime + iTunes" tab. It's also tricky because I just said that to lessen me looking stupid.

The thing I dislike about Quicktime is that I haven't found a way to get it to be full screen. Trying to watch a dark movie with a bright explorer in the background is not fun...
2004-02-17, 1:28 PM #28
Under the Movie window is a Full Screen option. From the brief test I did, if you select it, it goes full screen, no GUI, auto-plays, and then goes back to normal size when it finishes.

I pretty much only use WMP and the DivX player here. Occaisonally I'll use the IE quicktime plugin, but not very often.
