Ive always had a love-hate relationship with Redhat... I love it as a server; its easy to install, quick to set up, and runs forever stable as a rock. But, for the love of GOD dont run it as a desktop. Ever. EVER. I wouldnt make my worst enemy use Reshat on a desktop.

I am, of course, referring to RH9 and earlier. I cant speak for Fedora core, as Ive never installed or used it. However, Im going to take a guess that its no easier on your sanity than RH9...

LOL!!
I like RH. My first install of it was 7.3 I believe. Then I installed every version there after. I've tried others and always came back to RH.
In saying that, I have not tried gentoo or SuSe yet. So we'll see.
But for now it's Fedora next.

I've never had good experiences with RedHat as a desktop. Gentoo4Life.

Truthfully... I've never had much success with any distro that has an automated install process. Mandrake did alright on my system, but SuSE, Lindows, and RedHat fail horribly. I'll stick to Gentoo. It works for me, and I'm happy with pretty much all of it.

Edit: fixing bold tags in the quote.

I got so close to setting up Gentoo. In fact, I was finished, but my stupid network admin wouldn't open the ports needed by rsync... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif]

Now I stick to Slackware. Simple, lightweight... simply put, it just 'works'. I use Dropline Gnome with the Gorilla theme. No matter how many of you hate Gnome, you have to admit that Ximian makes pretty sharp stuff.

Hm.... I remember reading on the Gentoo forums about some way to make portage use the web port. I'm searching to find out what it is...

Edit: emerge-webrsync I believe is the command..

What do you mean about Ximian and Gnome Mystic0? I use Evolution with KDE.

I never had any luck with Red Hat either. The first one I installed was 6.2. Everything installed in the base distro worked, but any time I tried to install new software, I'd run into RPM dependency hell. I ran 7.x at work for about a month before I got pissed and installed mandrake. Ran into the same problems with 7.x as I did with 6.x - nothing would install. Nothing would compile. The only RPMs that actually worked were those bundled with the distro.

I stayed with Mandrake for about 3 months, and although I had many of the same RPM problems, at least I could compile things from scratch when I needed to [most of the time].

When I got to my new job, I spent the time it took to get Debian up and running. I had no problems with that computer at all. The install was more involved, but things worked correctly at least! Wait, I take it back, I had network card problems at first, but a guy I know told me how to fix them.

When I went to install a Linux distro at my house, I chose Knoppix, because it's just Debian, except it configures itself automatically. And installation is a breeze. And I never have problems compiling or installing software.

Hmmm...
That's good to know. I had trouble installing stuff on RH9. Thought it might just be me. Maybe not then.

Anyway, I'll let you guys know what I think of Fedora. And you can decide whether it carries any weight. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]
