Two good alternatives two photoshop, which are free, are Project Dogwaffle and The GIMP. Use Project Dogwaffle for drawing (especially if you have a tablet) and The GIMP for image editing and manipulation. You can't go wrong.

If you're a student i hear that adbobe gives out student discounts. (You can get Photoshop CS, illustrator CS, and Indesign CS I think for around $300 for everything. It stuill sounds expensive, but normally all these programs are well in excess of a thousand.

Or, you could just download the photoshop demo and crack it.... Just be careful that you dont get caught.

I don't have a tablet, and I don't really need one b/c i have something that's even better.

Its called Adobe Streamline, which lets me draw something freehand on paper, scan it, and then turns the scanned image into a vector graphic that i can work on in illustrator. It reconizes both monochrome and color drawings, and it even works to some extent on photos. (if you use it on a photo, you end up with a vector image that looks kind of like something that's been run through the posterize filter in photoshop.)

Great time saver. (You can download the demo from adobe, and see if you like it enough to buy it.).
