Webcam question
2004-02-21, 7:40 AM #1
Yo, me and my friend are thinkin bout buyin webcams and we're clueless on what kind to get. We wanna get a pretty good one for a decent price.

It has to take videos and pics and be easy to use... We're not gonna be hardcore camera users so we don't wanna spend more than 30 bucks if we have to.

I was thinkin about gettin the Creative Labs Webcam NX PC Camera. Is that good? Do you guys have any suggestions for one?

Thanks for the help.

First off, your sarcasm isn't funny, witty, or cool so stop trying
Second, quit trying to be funny, you just come off as lame or disgusting (like your twinkie post)
Third, why post here when I was just asking for help?
Fourth, don't tell me what to do.

Creative webcams are far from the best. If you want to buy a webcam, you should be ready to invest more than 50$ on it, otherwise you'll get a very poor resolution and a very slow stream. The best webcams usually double as digital cameras, seeing as they have much better optical receptors, and they range at around 200-300$. It's alot of money, but it's the best there is.

Oh, and the actual PICTURE TAKING is more important than the video... I'd rather have good picture quality than video quality.

Sounds pretty decent.

Just to give you an idea; most of what you see on television is filmed at 25fps.

However, do not forget that there is a reason TVs run at only 25 or so FPS. It is because they switch fields, meaning they only update half the screen at once. In all truthfullness, it'd really have to be over 50fps on a computer monitor to reproduce the smoothness of a TV. That's why people want their games to run at 60fps, because it is at that point it is as smooth or smoother than their TV. (NOT because after 60fps your eyes can no longer detect a difference. Because that's wrong. It's completely dependent on the person, and most people can detect framerate changes as high as 120+)

But that's all added detail.

Don't think you can order from this site, but maybe you'll find something useful there. I have a pretty old one of those versions, and it was quite cheap when I got it.

Yes, I concur with Flex. That sounds like a pretty decent webcam, though obviously the more expensive the better it will be. That resolution isn't too bad either, for 30 bucks.
I've always gotten the worse-end webcams, and they're a great deal of frustration. If you find a really good one, and it's a bit over your budget, go for it. Most likely, it'll be better resolution/easier to use.

$30 webcams have pretty bad quality. Here is a sample from a logitech ball shaped webcam:

Not allowed to insult people, bub. I commend you though, you managed to go a good two or three posts without any four-letter swear words, which is a first for you.

As for your question, here's my answer:

25fps in games is very good. People generally like having more because in FPS games, it allows for sharper reflexes, and has a lower chance of slowing down when you get a high detail scene. The importance is that it's not choppy.

I'm convinced the framerate counter is off in alot of games. In SWG I can get a framerate of like 25-30, and it appears to run perfectly smooth... then I go play something like raven shield, and if it gets below 40 I can notice... one would only have to ask oneself, "what's the deal [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]"

It's not a reflex thing, I'm pretty sure... because I don't mean notice, like, I can turn corners/aim faster... I mean notice as in like I can take my hands off the mouse and keyboard, watch a person walk by the camera, and tell a difference... :x

or maybe I'm just screwwy.

Correction: Fraps.

Anyways, if you're going to go webcam, I'd suggest a digital camera for what you're wanting for sure. My dad just got a new digi cam, video's all right, picture quality's quite nice, Kodak, forget the model #. But seriously man, lay off ROD-Nog, and everyone else just lay off. Rod-Nog, the point is he was asking for advice and you had none to offer. You don't have to post in every thread, that's called spam (and the reason many people here don't like you).
