I'm not entirely sure why i'm posting this but i was looking at the cereal in the pantry and i was reminded and felt like it. So.

It occurred to me several months ago that i am one of those rare genetically-recessive spawn who can taste BHT [a popular preservative]. This came to me while i was eating some cereal with preserved strawberries in them and it tasted horrible and rather chemical. At first i was all umm, maybe it's just gone bad so i got rid of it. But then a few days later i was eating some other cereal which had the same taste and i was all curious, and then some canned food i think a few days later with the same results.

Vaguely remembering summat i'd seen about some rare recessive reception to some preservative i did some scouting around and noticed that those things all had BHT which wasn't in a lot of the other stuff i eat. So i did some research and dug up about that sensitivity.

Now the peculiar thing is, i'm not sure if i just never noticed for all the years before, or somehow never ran into things preserved with it [which is strange, as it's rather common], or if somehow it was dormant and got expressed by something or what. The latter i guess is what i'm most curious about, because i know that there are other things [thuogh this one is a constant avoidance now] that i go through phases of can and can't really eat well or whatever [like milk and that sort of thing].

So i was wondering if anyone else here had a similar experience.

I think that's cool, how you can taste things (in this case, strawberries in cereal boxes) differently from everyone else. It's happened to me before, but I think they were just rotten strawberries, not anything to do with my genes.

Can you describe the taste a little more?

It's not really something i have a comparison to, just that it is really quite unpleasant [and strongly so, so can't just ignore it], and rather chemicalish.. beyond that.. couldn't say.
