Rant about severe lack of originality in star wars games..
2004-02-22, 9:06 AM #1
I downloaded the JA demo yesterday. I was surprised by how good the saber combat was.. but as usual, I'm annoyed by the lack of originality;

-Everytime an ennemy sees you, they just have to say some line from the movies.. can't they come up with something else for once?

-There are WAY too many references to original triology elements. Older star wars games didn't have this problem, but now it seems that in new games, every character in the star wars universe is in some way related to luke skywalker... oh, and look.. is that the millenium falcon in mos eisley? Of all the spaceports in the thousand cities on the thousand continents of the thousand star wars planets and star systems, it just HAPPENDS to be there! Oh, and here's chewie! What's that? He's talking about Leia, of course!

-The music is awful. They took the same tunes from the movies and butchered them. It keeps cutting and then some other bit starts over without any transition whatsoever. Don't get me wrong, John Williams is great... But we've already heard these tunes a million times, edited in a million different ways. Can't they come up with some new music for once? It can still feel like star wars.. they just have to use the same basic themes. They did it in X-wing. They did it in Tie Fighter.

-Lightsabers are cool n' all... but why stick to the old boring colors we've had in the previous games? Why not introducing some brand new saber colors for a change? How about teal? Or maybe pink?

If you're itching for some SW originality, I highly suggest KotOR. At times, it almost doesn't even feel like Star Wars at all. Plus, there's a lot of original music in it. I feel the same way you do about most of the recent SW games, but KotOR is a nice change.

Its... just a game...

I see your point some original lines would be nice but its just... ya... it really doesn't matter that terribly much.

Actually, the Stormtroopers have very original quotes in the game. If you sneak up on them but dont attack, you can listen to some rather long and amusing conversations that go on between them.

Yeah.. but I want another dark forces game. No sabers, no luke, no leia, no han. No tatooine, no naboo, no alderaan. Just some new characther running around (WITHOUT A LIGHTSABER) just shooting stuff. Maybe getting involved in some illegal dealing or something. A fight with some angry bounty hunters, some imperial scouts. SOMETHING THAT DOENST INVOLVE JEDI

Also, they are using the interrogation droid as an enemy. What power it has...

True, but Dark Forces started the trend of using interrogation droids for combat. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I'm sick of having to put up with Duke Guystalker too.

I want to deal with my own adventures, not tag along with Luke. Again.

The lightsaber combat in JO was better in my opinion, because in JO you could actually block. It would stop the other guy's saber in its tracks. In JA, all it does is play a block animation if the tip of the other guy's saber happens to knick your saber at the exact right range.
If you take a hit where a block would really come in handy, you just get knocked away and still take damage.

Bah.

with the exception of the "no [locationhere]" Republic Commando seems like it MIGHT break off of from the movies yet still have enough SW to be SW

other than that...

Truly your best bet is Knights of the Old Republic. The characters, story, game play, it's all incredible. The sound tracks are amazing. They were done by Jeremy Soule who did, NWN & Morrowind. This is quite an original Star Wars game.

I agree that star wars games have lost their originality and flair... they need to get back to the basics and drop the movie characters. I would run out and buy a DF-like Star Wars game in an instant. Perhaps dealing with the black markets and smuggling rings. Now THAT would be great. And yes, we have to lose the lightsabers. It's just not interesting anymore.
