Anyway, Cable internet is great right? Well, not if you keep getting disconnected...

I need help. I have two computers, one win 98 one XP, the 98 one is directly connected to a router, the XP is through wireless router. The brand of the modem and router is linksys, the brand of the wireless card in the XP is d-link.

As for what exactly happens: I'm on the wirelessly connected XP machine. My internet works fine under low traffic. I play play JK/Gunbound/Diablo ect ect, chat on AIM, surf the web just fine. Now the minute I have heavy downloads going (Pretty much just Anime from Bit Torrent) going at combined speeds of ~150 kb/sec dl and ~50 kb/sec upload, my cable modem loses signal (status light LED goes from constant shine to blinking), and I have to reset it by unplugging it and plugging it back in, then it works, only to disconnect in 10-50 minutes again of the download is still running. The network still works fine, I can transfer files from one comp to the other ect. But when that happens the internet is down for both comps, so I don't think it's the router, but who knows.

Any suggestions on where the problem may originate, or anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot for the time.

Addendum: I actually had someone come out before, and he did give an amplifier to the signal. I dunno what exactly the values he gave me means, but he said it went from a -10 to a -5. Still have the same problems though. Tech support tried to see if the router was slowing it down, so we did a ping to see if any packets were lost ect, but the router performed just as well as if the connection was directly from the modem. (0 packets lost, average ping of 10 ms to the server).

Call your cable company and yell at them until they come out and fix it.

It's probably due to a weak signal. Call up your cable company, and have them come out to test your cable line. If it is weak, they'll put an amplifier on it.

If you have a lot of splitters on the cable line, that'll also cause a weak signal at the modem. So disconnect as many splitters as possible from the main line coming into the house, to the cable modem and see if that helps.

Dang, I wish I was home to try that. But yeah, we actually had someone come out before, and he did give us an amplifier. I dunno what exactly the values he gave me means, but he said it went from a -10 to a -5. Someone is coming tommorow, so hopefully that will finally fix it.

Just to clarify, splitting the cable signal would be one to a tv, one to a comp, ect?

Thanks alot for your help btw.

I've had the same problem before and it was because I had a splitter. A cable guy came out to my house and said that you can't have a splitter on the line at all, and you're not even supposed to run it through a surge protector. I still run mine through a surge protector though, but without the splitter, and it hasn't gave me one problem since. If you want your TV to work, you have to call your cable company and get them to install another jack in the room.

Oh, that is a spilltter, har har.

Yeah, my jack is only connected to the cable modem, there isn't a spillter on that line.
