Far Cry demo thread, ver 3.0

...or is it 4.0?

Meh, anyway being a procrastinator on a 56k modem I didn't bother downloading this thing until a few days ago.....STUPID STUPID STUPID MAN.

I love this engine to a disturbing degree. I can't get over the amount of detail this puppy can kick out even with all the settings on full. The sound is also perfect.

The AI could use some tweaking sure (and I hear it's better in the beta) but still fairly impressive. If you drop a guy on the otherside of the level using a sniper rifle, his comrades will not just react - but make their way across the whole island looking for you.

Helpful link: http://personal.inet.fi/atk/kjh2348fs/fc_demo_info.html . Lots of info about the demo and console commands for improving various aspects of it.

I strongly recommend \e_sprite_min_distance, \e_terrain_lod_ratio, \e_obj_view_dist_ratio and \e_detail_texture_min_fov in particular as by playing with them I was able to noticably improve the graphics without taking a FPS hit at all. Also the water reflection fix is terrific if your PC can handle it.

I downloaded it and played for about 5 minutes. The performance was horrible on my athlon xp 2600+ and gf4 ti4200. It was just so choppy that I couldn't play. What type of machine are you guys running it on?
2004-02-23, 7:28 PM #5
p4 2.8ghz, 1 gig ddr400, 256mb 9800 Pro.

I've read about people with lesser computers than yours running it ok with a GF4 though bri, maybe you just need to tweak the settings some more? The demo is also a bit strange with AA/AF. Some of those console commands I mentioned in the first post can be used to improve performance too....though I hope something that drastic won't be necessary.

I really hope the devs add these console command things to the graphics settings menu on the full version. The ones the improve ground texture quality and increase the distance where models become sprites are essential IMO.

Well, I just ordered a p4 3.2ghz with a geforce fx something something so when that comes next week, I'll try again [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] No sense messing with this current piece of junk.

Cools [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] I can't recall the last time I enjoyed a demo so much...probably BF1942. I hope the editor is as cool as the preview video hints, after looking at CoD's editor I'm just dying for an official editor that doesn't, you know, suck.

You can run the farcry demo on opengl. I havnt had time to try it but using wine you should probably be able to get it running. Open 'systemcfg.lua' and change the tr_Driver to 'r_Driver = "OpenGL"'.

I play it on my Duron1300 with a geforce FX5200 and I get between 30-50fps on 640x480 with mediam settings. OpenGL would probably run faster on your 'old' machine.
