OK, here's the deal. I gutted an old VCR and managed to squeeze a PC into it. Here's the specs:

Pentium 233MHz MMX
1.5GB HDD
96MB RAM
Built-in video, sound, and ethernet.

Basicly I want this in my home theater setup to play my MP3s without having to hook my laptop up to it. I've got about 30GB of music on a Windows Server 2003 machine over here on the network. Now I'd like to control it from my wireless laptop or PDA from the web browser. I found a winamp plugin called WIKI that seems to do the job but I was wondering if there was a better solution to this. Maybe linux? If anyone else has had any experence in building something like this let me know.

Well, you could get one of those remotes with the mouse and keyboard on them for computer use and a receiver (HORRIBLE for everyday use, seems perfect for what you need) and call it a day. 'Sup to you.

have you looked into mini-ITX systems? you could fit them into a VCR or some such thing very easily.

Holy s***! I was browsing that site Is_907 posted and one of those computers was built by the Computer Interest Floor at the Univsersity of Rochester. Those guys live 6 floors below me... I'm so ashamed right now...
They also made a computer out of a pumpkin on Halloween which was posted on Slashdot. I can almost feel the dork aura as the elevator passes their floor.

Use your TV and Windows XP Media Center Edition. You can get remote controls / recievers that'll work for you, if you look around a bit.

I'm interested in building something like that, but I'm waiting until HDTV capture is... you know... less than the cost of a HDTV.

Thanks everyone, I got it working like a dream with the winamp plugin though. I don't have a tv out on that mobo, so I'm using my Zaurus to control it through Konquerer. Also I can use it as a remote for my TV if I ever figure out how to get lirc working on it...

I'll post some pics soon, thanks again.

http://winlirc.sourceforge.net

Theres a Winamp plugin for it, it works like a charm. Theres also other utils that will let you run apps on command, change system volum levels, etc. Its a sweet little utility.

You should also upgrade that sound card too...

Actually the VCR machine has crapped out, so I have a tower case sitting beside everything else now. On the plus side i get PCI slots now, so in goes the SB Live!
