Anyone here playing it? Ive got some friends playing it now, and I was thinking about joining. If you are playing it, would you say that it is worth the monthly fee? Also, is anyone playing it playing on a dial up, and do you get lag?

We have an MMORPG forum :/

And no I don't play it. Heard it wasn't that great.

Ya... we do. But the thing is nobody posts there :/

Wait... so, nobody posts in the MMORPG forum, so you take MMORPG posts to the main forum, thus making people who are interested in MMORPGs reply to your thread on the main forum instead of the MMORPG forum, making it even more dead, etc.

You get it?

Anyway... I play Final Fantasy XI, and its alot of fun, although lvls 6-10 really, really suck. Once you get to Level 10, the game gets really good. Its quite worth the monthly fee also.

I understand that the servers etc. need money to run, but after years of seen games played online, I find it stupid to pay for paying something online.

Well, time goes by etc. And besides I've more than a single player guy than someone who hangs around playing MP.

Even though FFXI is probably nice.

But hey, no FFXI in Finland so [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

There is no reason in hell to get it for PS2 if you have a good enough PC. If you get it for PS2, you have to buy a hard drive with it (Its required) you have to buy a keyboard (required) and you have to deal with lower texture quality and lower resolution. If you dont have a decent PC, I guess it's worth it. There are few cases where PC's have a distinct advantage over consoles, those 3 cases are First Person Shooters (Although this is waning), Real Time Stragegy, and MMOPRGs.

Does anyone know where screenshots are saved when you take them? I can't find them anywhere.

Yea, don't get it for the PS2. If your PC can play JO, it can play FFXI with NO PROBLEM. On lower settings, the game is not demanding at all.

I agree, you also forgot to mention the network adapter.

I was interested in getting it for a while, then I found that it still needs more development to reach what I see as a good Final Fantasy game, so I've yet to buy&subscribe.

There are many things missing that, to me, take a lot away from the game:

You cannot own any form of transportation yet; you can rent a choco, or hitch a ride on an NPC's boat/airship. I suppose that not allowing you to own boats/ships was due to the limitation they had on servers (dividing the world into zones and all), but i'd actually like to own a chocobo, and eventually an airship.

No P2P, yet. One of the things that I liked about many of the other MMORPGs (such as the original, UO), was that the player you meet online could be an enemy just as much as all those monsters out there. In FF XI, they had a unique opportunity to allow the players to shape their world this way. I'd like to be able to see a single player be allowed to reach an almost-godly level, and be the villian for the time being. Of course, once the villian is defeated, they come back considerably weaker, but still a powerful player, thus allowing for balance.

The spell system seems to have been diluted too much for the sake of "balance". The mega-power spells are now all balanced out, and might as well be called "Fire X", "Water X", and so on. Instead of simply having spell series just for Fire/Ice/Bolt, they also added Stone, Aero (I'll talk about it later), Water, Poison, and Bio series. Of course, these series have been seen in previous games, but not all at once. Including all of them makes no spell unique; you'll surely encounter somebody who has a spell of the same effect, just another element. I prefer the spells as used in FF VI (you haven't really played FF if you've yet to play any of I-VI)... The spell that annoys me most is Flare... In ALL other games, it deals heavy non-elemental damage, but not as much as the best spells, but is fairly cheap, and quick to cast. In FF XI, it is the most expensive spell, and deals FIRE damage...

Also, they have yet to include my favorite class, the blue mage. Since they game the "Aero" spells (the Blue Mage's attack staple) to the black mage, I see that SquareEnix has no intention of putting the class in. Of course, I suppose that this affects you little...

But don't get me wrong. FF XI seems to be a good game, a refreshing change (albeit a small one) from all the other MMORPGS. I am impressed how they managed to counter many of the problems presented by such a thing, such as overpopulation (limiting 50k to a randomly selected server, and giving everybody a house to start with). I just don't see myself wanting to play it all that much... And I am the kind of tightwad that thinks that the only online service that should be more than $10US/month is one's ISP (I think $30-$50 is a rather fair price for broadband, considering it has far more versatility than a $13 subscription to FF XI, or $15 for galaxies).

First off, buying chocobos is a possibility, but doesn't really have any advantage over renting one, other than just one lump sum.
Second off, ships/boats would ruin the point of using a chocobo. Everyone would be flying everywhere, and it would be mass airway carnage.

They will be introducing PvP, but they are waiting until the storyline gives a good reason to introduce it. As of right now, with the current story plot, pvp would not make any sense. But SquareEnix has guaranteed that there will be pvp in the near future, and it is already balanced and ready to go. It is just waiting up for the storyline.

I think the whole idea was to add more variation to the gameplay. It's not fun when every single blm is casting the same fire spell over and over. Having multiple different spells provides variation, and still gives the user the concept of "powering up". As for flare, I thought it wasn't in the game?

There are PLENTY enough jobs as it is. The blue mage isn't the only class left out of the game, it just was too hectic with three mages already in the game, on top of two semi mages (Dark Knight and Paladin). It's plenty enough for me.

I have heard nothing to the effect of buying chocos... I also forgot to mention that I'd prefer if they allowed fighting on choco-back, adding another element to the game (not to be confused with elements like fire, though [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]). Also, I saw a really simply way to prevent havoc in the water/air: have only a limited supply of boats (say, 300), and airships (say, 10) per server. They should only be ownable by high-level characters (at least 30 for boats, 60 for airships). That would be essentialy the same type of approach they used for housing, just applied to transportation. Since servers are limited in number of players, you wouldn't have to worry about accomidating new players all that much... If one leaves, they leave their ship behind, allowing for a new owner.

Flare is in the game... Check any FAQ written for it. As for the magic, I don't like having all the spells be "faces in the crowd". I liked for there to a be a large selection of unique spells; the fact that you would only find a specific effect in one "flavor" meant that there was a definitive way to defend against each specific spell... I don't mind not seing meteo/meteor/ultima, as they are un-blockable spells. However, I would have liked to see the spells from FF VI. Quake was the only spell in there that using "Float" would make you immune. "Flare" pierced every defense except a reflect spell. "Merton" would kill everybody, but having fire armor (making you weak to water), would have the spell heal the party. Now, a black mage can have a full repetoire of spells that have very little variance, aside from their strength and element.

I also disaprove of them making two of each type of spell: one for single target, on for multi-target. The variable-mode spell was one of the things that I really liked about FF, and it's elimination for the sake of simplicity (pressing another button for multi-target) makes me sad, as it put FF down with lesser RPGs.

There's never enough classes when you've got tens of thousands of people playing on a single server. Currently, there are only 15 classes. I think that there could be a lot more, such as the Blue Wizard and the Mystic Knight. I don't think that having more classes would make it more "hectic" at all. In fact, it would probably provide more balance, by lowering the percentage of all abilities a player may utilize with one character, making parties more powerful compared to single players than previously.

That gives an unfair advantage to higher-ups and Japanese players (Since Japanese are almost all high-levels, not that I blame them for this.). Plus, new characters are made ALL THE TIME. It may not seem so, but it is. People trash their old ones, and start over. People get world passes to other servers. It's extremely common. I wouldn't be surprised if there are 50-100 new characters a DAY.

This is getting down to nitty gritty nit-picks. We could go all day on how gameplay works and how it should be like such and such FF game. I'm just going to drop it.

I do want to comment on Flare though. I looked it up, and it is a spell. I was mistaken. It's just a really high level one. As for the fact that it is supposed to deal physical damage, you have to remember this:
Final Fantasy XI has no magical elemental type of physical. It had to be fire, simply because they can't make it a physical attack spell.

[/b]

Now, it WOULD make the game more unbalanced, for one simple reason. More variety = less chance for balance. If they add more character classes, that introduces a whole new set of problems for the programmers. They have to not only make sure that they balance with eachother, but that they balance with all pre-existing characters. This can be VERY HARD. Heck, look at Diablo II. The expansion introduced the Druid and Assassin. As any good D2X player knows, Druids suck. Period. They are PLAYABLE, but they are no-where near the power or strength a sorceress or a barbarian might. Heck, it's near impossible to beat the game on hardest difficulty with a Druid, especially soloing. There are many other examples of this in other games too. And then you get patches, which tries to balance the characters, and only ticks people off by changing their playing style halfway through their character.

Now as for your Blue Mage, there might be a possibility for it anyway, although unlikely. They might release another expansion with the Blue Mage in it, but as far as I know, I don't see it happening.

A. You can buy a PS2-USB converter
B. Most video cards have TV out.
C. Recliner

And it won't require you to spend $600+ on extra equipment you won't use for anything but that game.

I do think it was in bad taste (although the tradition of "Japan Inc.") to release it to the U.S. roughly a full year later. That is why the top-level players are all in Japan; they had a 12-month head-start, and we've only had it for roughly a season.

As for balancing classes, I think not! The dragoon seems to be a bit disbalanced: jumping (especially when you get "ultra jump", or whatever the highest level is) way beats traditional attacking, and the ability to summon a wyvern from level 1 makes them a teensy bit overpowered, I say. If a class is too powerful, just make it harder to get! They only had to worry about balancing the basic six, and they seem to have done that really well (probably because they had them balanced from the original FF game).

As for blue mages, I know I'm not the only one that would like to see one, but I highly doubt that they'd add it, especially as it would mean taking spells away from the black mage (most notably the wind and water spells).

As for new characters, the population level of each server has a limit; I believe that it's 50,000. The "Mog House" was the perfect solution to something like UO's housing crisis. Everybody gets one house, and it is modest in size. If they simply place a totla limit on the nmber of ships ownable (having them always be in play, instead of the silly "deeds" they had in Ultima), you wouldn't have to worry about too many in the game. After all, the real world has limited resources, why shouldn't a fantays world, too?

As for spells, having a spell that's non-elemental is easy, if you understand how the code for the spells is written: you simply don't select any elements. In earlier console games (I-IX), a single byte (8 bits) was dedicated to the element of each spell/weapon, thus allowing for spells/weapons to have any combination of the eight elements, or none at all. I suppose that it's probably a text-like list in X/XI, but you could still leave the spaces blank, and have a spell that doesn't have an element.

Oh, and as for platform, I wouldn't try using it on the PS2; PC can get TV output (check any recent video card), or get a better resolution (I like playing at 1024x768). Also, I don't think one can get broadband for the PS2, and the input for the PC is much better than for the PS2.

A. You can buy a PS2-USB converter
B. Most video cards have TV out.
C. Recliner

And it won't require you to spend $600+ on extra equipment you won't use for anything but that game.

Why use TV out when my PS2 is right there? I don't really give a damn about higher resolution textures and crap.

I'll buy the game because it's only $100 dollars with the hard drive. I want the hard drive because future games will support it. Socom II already has support programmed in.

I don't like playing games on a computer, I'm a console gamer through and through.

And yes of course you can get broadband on PS2 nottheking, certain games only allow you to play on broadband.

And you need a PS2 keyboard and broadband adapter.

Well, I usually visit forums where new posts are, all I have to see is the lightbulb and I'm there.
