How do I go about doing it?
Someone told me I cannot do it with a regular ethernet cable, and I would need another cable. Is that true? That aside, plugging a wire between two computers is the least of my problems.

-What would I have to do on each computer to esatablish a connection between the two so I can transfer all my files from my old computer (98SE -If anything needs to be installed to do it... it's installed. We have transfered files in the past.. I just forget what we did) to new (XP).

If both computers were XP.. I could do it in a cinche.. but the 98 thing screws me up ><
(mm and I'm onto my 3rd Account.. Keep on forgeting my password..and forget my email so I can't reclaim it lol. I just had my password saved for those years I've been here)

You shouldn't need anything other than a 10/100 Ethernet card in each comp, a standard Cat cable and a router.

If the PCs don't detect each other but are connected, go to
Start -> Run
and type
\\192.168.1.100
or
\\192.168.1.101
\\192.168.1.102
etc.
for different computers. This will show you all the shared files available on each system.

That is assuming the router assigns those IP addresses. And you don't even need a router, a hub or a switch will do fine. You can skip that by just using a crossover cable, but it is only good for PC to PC unless you get an adapter. You may be able to get an adapter for a regular straight through cable to turn it into a crossover cable. The only difference is that the crossover has the wires flipped on one end, that way the wires PC1 uses to send end up in contact with the pins PC2 uses to receive.

If you still cannot get your network running, I have a program that fits on a floppy that should help you out. It's what I used to make my XP/98 network run correctly.

Yeah, hubs are cheap nowadays. Once they are connected, you have to enable file sharing on both computers, and if you double click network neighborhood (or whatever they renamed it to --again-- in windows xp), it should automatically see the other computers.
