Aussie, Aussie, Aussie...Oi ! Oi ! Oi !

Long story short:

An American company trademarked the word UGG. In Australia we have these sheepskin boots known as Ugg boots which have been around since forever. Now the American company (Deckers) has threatened legal action against anyone selling Ugg boots, or using the word Ugg. This is akin to trademarking the word “sandwich” and preventing cafeterias from calling them sandwiches.

Ugg is a generic term that has been around since the boots first came about. The whole thing is bloody ridiculous and I can't see how anyone ever passed the trademark in the first place.

For more info see here:
The Age Wellington guide UK telegraph

Now I just saw on the news that in response to this, an Aussie couple has trademarked the phrase “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie Oi! Oi! Oi!” for $5000 to prevent anyone from stealing it, but the conditions of their patent allow people to use it whenever they want, they just can’t make it into a brand name. Good on em I say, even if the price is a bit steep.

Still hasn't solved the Ugg Boot issue for us. And I can't see how any other country could possibly profit from our famous footy chant, anyway.

...that's pathetic. It's when humans exhibit this kind of petty behaviour that I wish the asteroid would hurry up and hit us. We need another good ol' survival of the fittest era.

Your puny trademarks won't mean much when my crew of Mad Max style outlaws come hunting for fresh meat on our heavily modified dune buggys Mr. Business Executive.

And then we'll throw them in the Thunderdome. That'll teach 'em to mess with the boys from down under.

Not a bad idea Jin. We could get them to wrestle Steve Irwin, in Ugg boots, screaming Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, in the Thunderdome and pitch it as a new olympic sport. We could call it eXtreme Stevedoming...or something.

Awesome....I'm inspired. Well, as inspired as one can be when the only vehicle available to be Mad Max modded is a Daewoo Matiz.

This just in, I trademarked the letter "A" (lower and upper case). I am fully ready to prosecute anyone using this letter without my permission to the fullest extent of the law.

I trademarked the sound of "m" long ago. Everytime someone so much as THINKS the sound of M, I get 10 cents.

I remember watching a report about that on Today Tonight (the ugg boots, not Extreme Stevedoming although given the level of journalism by the reporters it wouldn't surprise me that Anna Coren would go after it faster than a fat man with a super sized meal from McDonald's) during the summer. The whole idea of registering a generic name is beyond comprehension.

Oh and next time, if someone is going to post pictures of ficticious movies starring Steve Irwin and Beyonce, give me prior warning because I just got in trouble for laughing out loud in my IT class

I just patented bad grammar.

Everyone who even tries to imitate me and type bad grammar must pay me 1 dollar per bad grammar sentences. Thank you(s).

You shouldn't be able to own the rights to a word and use that ownership to keep other people from using it. Whatever happened to fair use rights, or common sense for that matter?

The law has run amok. Words have belonged to everyone in the past, so why does that have to change now. I hate these f***ing greedy corporations that feel that they have to own it all and at all costs. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif]
