Long story short:
An American company trademarked the word UGG. In Australia we have these sheepskin boots known as Ugg boots which have been around since forever. Now the American company (Deckers) has threatened legal action against anyone selling Ugg boots, or using the word Ugg. This is akin to trademarking the word “sandwich” and preventing cafeterias from calling them sandwiches.
Ugg is a generic term that has been around since the boots first came about. The whole thing is bloody ridiculous and I can't see how anyone ever passed the trademark in the first place.

Now I just saw on the news that in response to this, an Aussie couple has trademarked the phrase “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie Oi! Oi! Oi!” for $5000 to prevent anyone from stealing it, but the conditions of their patent allow people to use it whenever they want, they just can’t make it into a brand name. Good on em I say, even if the price is a bit steep.
