So I was bored yesterday, and went through some of my older games, and stumbled across my old Rebellion CD. I havent played it in years, and when I did I found it boring because, well, why play this when I can play JK?

But I started up a game yesterday and in a flash 4 or 5 hours went by. I played as the Empire, and it was so much fun to start dominating the galaxy. Though I may need to start over cus it took me a little while to re-learn how it worked, and my fleets were way too small.

It's kind of funny, because now I have school/work until 8pm tonight (CST), and all I can think about is gettin back into that game.

Welcome back.

The problem with rebellion was, is that it was not as flashy as some of the other games coming out, when flashy was the trend, and people prefered to stare at a game rather than play it.

Now, with graphics not so much a big deal anymore (most everyone is on equal footing), gamers are able to move past the graphics, and see game substance. And there is a ton of substance in rebellion, and a lot of substance lacking in today's flashy games...

Rebellion is so great game. Even though it has it's flaws, it is so damn great and addictive.

Yes.

The focus today isn't on substance. It's on franchises, prostitution and world war 2 emulation.

I know Masq - that is what I was saying... that because the graphics quality of games has evened out, gamers are now less "dazzled" by them like they used to be, and are more focused on the substance of the game than they used to be. Which is why going back to rebellion, it seems more fun. Initially, people were bored with it because they didn't like the graphics. But there is no feeling like ramping up 5 Death Stars to get control of the galaxy...

Is substance what the majority of gamers want though? Or is it just the older gamers who have been around the block and seen the requirements rise and the quality fall?

If they[the majority of paying gamers] do have those simpler demands, then the developers will match them to sell their products. And unless those demands change I don't think we'll see substance became a priority again. We're left to digging up relics.

I think you're talking about Force Commander.

But anyway, I just started playing rebellion again too! it's so much fun. I even found a couple mod files i had sitting around that makes everything incredibly cheap and easy to make (and if you're the rebellion, really strong too)

Good times that Rebellion..

Yeah, I've got Force Commander. The game had great potential (and a really awesome cinematic intro), but the command point system was totally off as was some of the music. Still it was one of the first "strategy" games to be fully 3D. That was cool. I believe it came out in '99. And just look at how popular games of that typecast are today (Age of Mythology, WarCraft III, Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis). Just goes to show, some of the worst games may have the best ideas - and that good idea is taken by other game designers and improved upon. Unfortunately, a lot of games are really creative like that, but they bomb because those ideas haven't caught on yet with mainstream gamers.
An unfortunate fate for many a game.

Rebellion was really cool, and I have consistently played it. The one thing that pissed me off about it, though, is the insane interface problems...just to send a character on a mission, you have to:
1.) Open the system
2.) Double click on the planet's defenses.
3.) Right click the character.
4.) Right click the mission (not counting looking at his stats to see if he's good at the mission)
5.) Choose the mission you want (not even counting decoys)
6.) Somehow find a target with another series of clicks.
7.) Click OK.

This adds up to about 30 seconds of game play just to give an order.

Even though the interface sucked, Rebellion is hugely entertaining to me.

No...

30 seconds...no

5-10 seconds and anything can be done, you just have to get comfortable with it, then you don't even think about it

Friend of mine spent every single period of Year 12 English sitting up the back of the class playing Rebellion on his laptop. I remember once we re-enacted the Battle of Endor, the Empire won in about 2 minutes flat, without the Death Star even firing a shot. Stupid Emperor.

Ah yes rebellion. My favorite starwars game for about a year when I was younger. It's amazing. Simply amazing.

I played that game a lot a few years back, then I loaned it to a friend and when he gave it back, it was scratched and wouldn't work anymore.
