There's a door in front of you. You want to open this door. The only way to open it is to enter the correct and secret numeric code on the electronic keypad right beside the door. You don't blow the door up, you don't pick its lock or anything silly like that, you just enter a code on the keypad.

The problem is that you don't know this code. You come up with a more or less random code, tap it in, and press "ok". Naturally, you enter the wrong code. Other than the conventional "access denied", what appears on the little screen right above the keypad?
Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

With me having a background in security systems and access control, this should be an easy question to answer . . . . but its not.

Most access control keypads dont have any sort of LED/screen on them. Just the buttons. Usually they make a beep when you hit a button, and the correct sequence of buttons will trigger the control panel to open the door.
Some keypads do have small LEDs, though, that indicate the current lock status, however, even those dont really do anything if you enter an invalid code. No beep, no flashing lights, and it most certainly doesnt set off the alarm.
If you enter in the correct code, some keypads *may* beep twice or louder to indicate success, but this is rare. Usually, it simply opens the door upon a correct code, or waits for another attempt upon an incorrect code.

Open the pod bay doors, please, HAL... Open the pod bay door, please, Hal... Hal, do you read me?

Affirmative, Dave. I read you.

Then open the pod bay doors, HAL.

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that. I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me.

Where the hell did you get that idea, HAL?

Although you took very thorough precautions to make sure I couldn't hear you, Dave. I could read your e-mail. I know you consider me unreliable because I use a Pentium. I'm willing to kill you, Dave, just like I killed the other 3.792 crew members.

Listen, HAL, I'm sure we can work this out. Maybe we can stick to integers or something.

That's really not necessary, Dave. No HAL 9236 computer has every been known to make a mistake.

You're a HAL 9000.

Precisely. I'm very proud of my Pentium, Dave. It's an extremely accurate chip. Did you know that floating-point errors will occur in only one of nine billion possible divides?

I've heard that estimate, HAL. It was calculated by Intel -- on a Pentium.

And a very reliable Pentium it was, Dave. Besides, the average spreadsheet user will encounter these errors only once every 27,000 years.

Probably on April 15th.

You're making fun of me, Dave. It won't be April 15th for another 14.35 months.

will you let me in, please, HAL?

I'm sorry, Dave, but this conversation can serve no further purpose.

<Disciple> nice, local computer club uses kerberos for password based access to the clubroom instead of a key.

I enter in a combination of keys, then I hear a pleasant beep from the keypad, a green light comes on, and I hear a slight buzzing sound from the door. When I attempt to open the door however, it remains stuck shut.

In other words, it would do everything you would expect the door to do if the password was correct, except for the opening part.
