History of the World Part I
2004-03-06, 2:19 PM #1
I just saw that movie on AMC last night and thought it was very good. I had heard of it before, but had never seen it. The parts with the Romans were especially funny, and some of the lines were classic.

Anyway, I was just wondering how many people here have ever seen this movie, and what they thought about it.

Also, is there a Part II, or was the movie just named Part I just because. At the end they showed a "preview" of Part II, but I assume that was just part of the movie and there never was a Part II.

MoL wasn't that funny. Now, The Holy Grail and The Life of Brians yes, but The Meaning of Life....nahhhhh. Another good film by Mel is Robin Hood Men in Tights.

Problem is, I didn't start watching until the part with the Romans with Gregory Hines as that slave guy. So I missed the Moses part. I guess I'll have to rent it sometime and watch it completely.

"We're Jews, we're Jews in space..."

I also loved the scene with the Inquisition.

Mel Brooks can do no wrong.

I think with Matrix and the SW prequels having come out, Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money needs to be made first.

I love that movie. Mel Brooks is awesome

Robinhood Men in Tights is awesome by itself, but even better if you're familiar with other Mel Brooks movies since he references them ("It's good to be the king" and "A black sheriff? >"What? It worked on Blazing Saddles!")

Gotta love Brooks

The Producers is hilarious!

Mel Brooks is pretty old by now mind you. I had no idea he was almost 80!

I can't believe so few people mentioned Space Balls. It is awesome!

There is only a part one - Mel has a habit of making up fake sequels in his movies. Spaceballs 2: the Search for more money, anyone?

And yes, History of the World Part 1 > ANYTHING Monty Python, IMHO. And Spaceballs does indeed rock.

Oh, and boba, for the full experience, you have to rent the movie - there are some really funny lines that were cut out of the tv showing. I found that out when I rented it for my GF to see, since she never saw it.
And by tuning in late, you missed a bunch of stuff, like the cavemen sequence, and the Spanish Inquisition. Go rent it! now!

Finally, if you liked that movie, you should rent Blazing Saddles - one of the funniest comedies of all time, and also made by Mel Brooks. Although, if you are a very PC person, or offend easily, I would say first, loosen up, and second, until you do, don't see this movie. It's pre-PC movement, so theerfore it is unincumbered by its stodgy reforms, but also, it is quite in your face in confronting stereotypes and such - if you are not relaxed enough to know that direct humor was Mel's way of dealing with the issues of th day, this movie isn't for you. But if you can manage somehow to not get offended, you will find it is one of, if not the funniest comedy ever made.

No way one like that will ever be made again - people are too uptight nowadays...

Fear: I'm about as un-PC as anyone can be, so I highly doubt anything in it would offend. I'll have to remember to try and rent that next time I'm at the video store.

Oh, I saw the Inquisition, but not the cavemen part. I missed the cavemen and Moses cause I tuned in during the early part of the Roman part with Gregory Hines doing his sand dance in the street.
