Is there any exception to this rule (I got a bet going($5.29)) Can someone give me a REAL english word that "q" is the first letter followed by a letter other than "u".

Why not, oh, I don't know, pick up a dictionary and look through all the words in Q? In fact, Q is in the dictionary...

Just "Q" won't do it...

Oh sorry I did not think of that. I should look in that book full of words known as a Di-cion-ary. Under Q you say, wow thank you! You have successfully stated the obvious. I do congradulate you on your attempt to make yourself seem intelligent but I guess you have FAILED! (the following has been a sarcastic comment which I must announce because I must now state the obvious(the following has been a sarcastic comment which I must announce because I must now state the obvious))

Not including words with a totally foreign or Native American etymology?

Nope.

There are a few English letters that serve no purpose, and Q is one of them. The only reason non-English words can be spelled with a Q is a bit of generous transliteration. ie. "Qibla". Most of the non-Qu words I can find are actually Arabic transliterations.

It's in the Official Scrabble Dictionary, so I consider it an English word.

The vast majority of the q* words english has, are from Latin. Just like al* words tend to be from Arabic. ie alchemy, algebry. al-Qemi, al-Jibra [pardon my suspect transliterations].

As Jon[?] pointed out, Q is just kinda one of those backwards pointless letters. Personally i blame the Romans for giving everyone an alphabet which is as a rule /horribly/ suited to writing the languages it is used for [thus the innumerable spelling/pronunciation exceptions and such].

English draws from many sources. Who's to say what is "official" English and what isn't? I think if it's in the official Scrabble dictionary it can be used. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

English used to not have any "qu" words in it. It was only until William of Normandy conquered England was the "qu" introduced. Example: "queen" was spelled "cwēn" The French invasion helped bring a lot of Latin into English language.

Do any of the following count?
  • Q-tip
  • Qatar (a country in eastern Arabia)
  • Qatara Depression (a desert basin in NW egypt)
  • Qin (Chinese Dynasty)
  • Qing (Chinese Dynasty)
  • Qingdao (Eastern Chinese city)

The Chinese words should count... because the Chinese don't use Enlish letters. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]
