Enough is enough. Adware and popups are driving me out of my mind! I left my computer on for something like 30-60 minutes, came back, and have like 20-30 ads on my screen.
I scanned with Ad-Aware 6.0 about 30 minutes ago and found around 26 new adware objects. Scanned about 5 minutes ago, found 17 new objects already. Scanned again right now, found another 5 objects. Another one just popped up, and I can't even close it.

Most of them are tracking cookies, occasionally some from e-bay, something called "purity scan" is on the list a lot.

Ironically, most of them are stuff like "block pop-ups" or "your privacy could be invaded". Dumb ***holes. I wouldn't have to worry about so many popups & crap if they didn't start it. How much faith do I have in a popup-blocking program that advertises using popups? You guessed it.. NONE. These people are ****ing morons.

Now I'm getting popups from Yahoo Hotjobs (which almost sounds like a porn site). WTF? I get my internet service through Yahoo DSL. Why the hell do they need to send me popups. More morons.

One more scan... 7 more objects... deleted... but they'll just come back.

Looks like a hard drive format is in order. Hoorah for my mult-partitioning. At least I can just copy any needed files to another partition, since all my system files (and thus adware) is on drive C... but then I have to go through the trouble or reinstalling all my hardware drivers... a huge pain in the @ss. *sigh*

That concludes my rant.

[Dammit. Another uncloseable ad popped up.]

I never had many problems...what kinda crap do you download? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Get the Google toolbar (blocks popups)..get the newest version of AVG (www.grisoft.com)..get SpyBot and another AdAware update. Run everything again, then see what happens.

In all seriousness, use a different browser. Mozilla and the like won't let adware install on your system, simply because they don't support it. Of course, this won't do any good for those spyware and adware that is already on your computer, but it will avoid problems in the future.

I have Yahoo's DSL toolbar, which blocks popups that attempt to use the same browser. The particular popups I get are *all* in Microsoft Internet Explorer... which I occasionally need to use.

*shudder*

Is that kinda like AOL's browser? Stick with a real browser..not whatever proprietary crap they give you. =)

On another note..why "Yahoo" for DSL??

Download Spybot: Search and Destroy, get Firefox. I have not had a single popup since I made the switch from IE

Hell no (although it's similar in some respects). AOL's browser takes like what... 2 minutes to load? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] Yahoo's browser... a couple seconds. The only thing I don't like about their browser is there's no "properties" item on the right-click drop down menu. That's where I have to use Internet Explorer.

Why not? Same internet, and Yahoo's server (at least their DSL server) has yet to fail on me... except maybe last night, which lasted about 2 minutes, if even that.
Out of curiousity, how fast is DSL actually supposed to be? I've had it up to over 1MB per second. I was under the impression that it was limited to 300Kb/sec.

Already have it.

I deleted all my cookies and 45MB worth of temporary internet files. So far that seems to have solved the problem... but I'm still skeptical.

I'm not sure where people get this plague of pop-up ads. I mean, unless you're file-sharing or browsing porn/warez sites, you don't contract this stuff.

And, yes, I use IE for internet browsing. Cue the third-party fanboys.

If your popup and spyware problems are that severe, reformatting and using a different browser is the best idea. If you choose to use IE, you'll have to get some third party software, such as toolbars or system tray apps which block popups and stop spyware. All of which do an inferior job to Mozilla or Opera.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Double click Messenger > Change the start up mode to 'Disabled', This SHOULD eliminate some pop-ups if you ahven't done so already.

Happened to me before. There were evil things like viagra and such, as well as all that. It started when I went to one of those "Your computer is in danger! Here's a test!" sites. I upgated ad-aware and got rid of it all. 248 objects methinks

I'd agree if all the popups were porn-related. None of them are. (At least not yet)

I discovered some file in task manager: wpcpp, or something similar to that. It's always present during popups, claims to be not responding, yet when I close it, the popup ads go away (unless I'm having an unusually large outbreak of popups). I tried finding this file under "startup" using msconfig, but it's not there.
