HELP- comp makes a sound from hell and dies
2004-03-07, 7:09 PM #1
I was overclocking my TNT2 and all was well until I turned it off and back on. It made a sound from hell like a disk or fan was scratching... it was really loud. Then the computer just kinda died off. I know it's not the card, well, because it dosn't have any fans on it. I don't think it's my disk drive because there is no disk in it. I hope to God it's not my power supply.

I tried booting again after about 10 minutes. It actually worked for about 30 seconds, but then it did the exact same thing. I don't know if it died on it's own or if I shut it down in panic, because it was so LOUD.

WTF could make such a noise??? How could overclocking a video card lead to this????

HELP.

Edit: Before I last shut it down, I set the clockspeeds back to normal.

Pull off anything not needed to boot and try it again. If it works, start adding peices one by one till you find the culprit.

Maybe the HUGE power needs of an overclocked TNT2 put too great a load on your PSU...

:S

That kinda sucks, hope it's nothing serious. GBK's idea sounds about right.

BTW... I've decided not to overclock my next video card.

my comp runs a little on the warm side due to the fact that I have to house it inside a cabinet instead of properly placing it on the top of my desk, so I'll never overclock anything in my comp.

I am talking to you from my linux box that I thought I ****ed up. I put in my spare graphics card, my Geforce 4 ti, which was sitting around collecting dust. It works great. Not problems with the hard drive so far.

WTF? Why the hell did you even bother trying to overclock a TNT if you had a GF4TI "lyring around"!?!?!? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

...

Downgrade from 9800 Pro to TNT2 (I sure as hell hope the guy traded a LOT of cash for it)

Try to overclock TNT2 because, for some utterly absurd reason you thought a ~6 year old 3D card should work as well as a brand new high end one.

Totally destroy the TNT2 and swap it out for a GeForce4 Ti that you just weren't using?

Does that about sum it up?

Good god. Are you going to trade the GF4 for a Voodoo 2 now? Maybe give it a better home before you try overclocking again?

Many of you may be wondering what I am on. I can assure you that I am not stoned. Here is my explanation.

I bought a Radeon 9800 Pro for $280 back in December. It worked wonderfully in Windows.

However, the linux drivers were very poor. For this reason I sold it for $200 a couple of days ago.

At this point, why didn't I put my Geforce 4 in? Because I thought it was broken. I have had problems with it in the past.

So I put the TNT2 in. I knew it was crappy, so I decided to overclock it for kicks.

Computer gets ****ed up. Hope I didn't hurt the hard drives...

At this point I tried the Geforce 4 TI, despite the fact it seemed dead. However, much to my suprise, it worked. So here I am.

Why didn't I tell you this upfront? Well I have to have a little fun, don't I? Did you think your fellow massassian was a stoner? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I can't wait until NV40 / Doom III, and I think the geforce will hold me over very nicely. I had plans for future overclocking, but after this experience they are pretty much out of the question.

Lemme get this straight... You were peeved about the lack of linux 3d acceleration support of the radeon, despite the fact that gaming on Linux as a whole sucks completely, and decided to SELL THE CARD because of it? So you ended up losing $80 because it wouldn't support an operating system not even meant for gaming. As my friend would say: "GOOD GAME"

Think of it this way:
So you got Linux working with 3d acceleration. Yippe. Now, let's do a rundown of what you can do.
You can play:
UT
UT2003/4
Quake #
NWN

Now of course, you can get a few others to play using WINE, but it's not guaranteed. Heck, its not guaranteed you'll get the ones listed above to even work.

Second off, this is what you'll be losing by going to gaming in linux:
Compatibility - Obviously
Speed - Except for the games listed above, you will never get a game to run faster in linux, because it has to run all the windows stuff to do it. It's bass-ackwards.
Audio - 3D audio support in Linux is near-nothing. No EAX, no dolby digital, hell you'll be lucky to get any 3D audio acceleration at all.
Ease of use - You'll spend more time getting games to run in Linux than actually playing them.

I'm usually full-on supportive of linux, but when it comes to gaming, I just can't justify your decision.

Thank you Cool Matty, and Mystic0, what Ti?? I have a 4400 and it runs like a frellin dream. I get ~100 FPS in UT2k3, unless it's a humongolor or beautiful map (Chrome). I get about 40 FPS in UT2k4. I don't think UT2k4 has an OGL option [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]. Least not the demo.

Yah, problem is I need to download Gentoo first, which is far too big. All the Gentoo files I see are like 15 gigs on their site, probably bigger. I need a distro that's 2-3 CD's, and I'll be good.

www.linuxiso.org

Gentoo is NOT 15 gigs. Unless you install like every freakin thing on portage, which is stupid.

You can get the Gentoo FTP boot disc up on that link, or any of the stage tars.

Stage 1 - Complete fresh compile of your system. Requires a lot of effort and time. Usually done straight from the web.
Stage 2 - Main linux system compiled already, you compile the programs you will use. Requires less time and frustration, but still takes awhile. Also usually done over the net.
Stage 3 - No compiling, fresh system for your processor. Most consider it the easy way out. If you use this, you might as well not use Gentoo, and go with something else.

I think you forgot a few:

Doom III
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Enemy Terretory
America's Army
Civilization
Soldier of Fortune
Tribes 2
Postal
Alpha Centauri
Heretic II
SimCity 3000 Unlimited
Descent 3
And soon the Medal of Honor games

Not to mention that almost every Quake III based game will run under Wine / Winex

Here are the games that are said to run perfectly under Winex (and yes, it is free if you use the CVS version):

The Sims (Mandrake Gaming Edition)
Warcraft III
Kohan - Immortal Sovereigns For Linux
Max Payne
Warcraft III: Frozen Throne
Diablo 2

Many many more run with minor irritations:

If you want support, you can opt to pay $5 a month. If you do this, just remember all the money you are saving by not buying MS Windows / Office / other windows crap.

May I remind you that transgaming has been known to lie out their teeth about support. Don't believe me? Do a quick search on WineX and Diablo II or Max Payne. You'll get PLENTY of problems.

And as for the games you listed:

Doom III - Not released
Return to Castle Wolfenstein - Q3 engine
Enemy Terretory - Q3 engine
America's Army - UT2003 engine
Civilization - Who plays that old one?
Soldier of Fortune - Q3 engine
Tribes 2 - Give ya that, I guess. Never heard of it under linux.
Postal - Where?
Alpha Centauri - Someone plays this? Fine, Ill give it to you
Heretic II - Same as above.
SimCity 3000 Unlimited - Same as above.

May I also mention that these games will not run 'out of the box' either. You will have to prod around, it's almost guaranteed. But if you enjoy a substandard gaming experience, don't let me stop you.

Oh, and may I remind you of the fact that I am talking about Linux as a gaming system, not as a home office. Obviously if all you will be doing is browsing the web, programming, checking email, or doing general office stuff, Linux is great. I'm not arguing that point. But saying that 'not buying Windows is a factor' is stupid, because you already have it, according to your previous statements above. You're not saving money.

But like I said, I am focusing on the gaming aspect. Linux has substandard gaming. Bad sound, bad compatibility (Based around 2 game engines, and 'windows DLL execution' (aka wine)) and subpar graphics.

You don't need to play many different games, just find a couple that are very good. Like id games.
