Who gets better at games when I'm not actually thinking about playing them?

I was playing Mortal Kombat 4 with my friend this evening and I was doing alright.. then one round I just drifted off and started thinking about something else but I was still playing the game. I diddnt realise until my friend said "Woah, nice." and I was like "uh... yeah."

I've noticed this before when playing other games and stuff like UT I can aim so quickly when i'm not really concentrating on what i'm doing.

Anyone else get this or am I just weird?

That works for a lot of things. The less you worry about them, the less those worries impede your performance.

Yeah.. like that falldown game on the graphing calculators? I usually double my score if I'm having a conversation with someone or something. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I always play CoD MP to relax. I turn on some heavy metal rock and my mind just completely drifts away,(usually thinking about a girl) yet 95% of the time I get 1st place...

If I'm trying, I suck really bad and get my butt kicked.

That's happend to me too but not just computer games. Sometimes when I'm playing a sport I can get real good although I'm kinda drifting away in my thoughts.
It happend just yesterday when I was sparring with a friend in class. My mind kinda drifted off and my speed and strength for my punches went up a lot and I didn't even feel that tired.... until I was finished anyway. owwwww *rubs sore arms* lol

Yep. Me too. I used to play tetris on my way to school every day. My average was 96 lines, but one day I kinda zoned off around 80, and tuned back in when I realized I hit 140... Well, I tuned in when I realized the peices were blurring on the game boy.. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Kirby will vouch for this.

I have "three levels of gaming" in JK.

Level One - Hardly concentrating. I call this "playing one-handed".

Level Two - I start paying attention, and caring. I call this "playing two-handed".

Level Three - I just zone in I guess. It's weird, but I get a ton better here. I'll make shots I would normally never make. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Same here JK, I noticed that if I'm playing CS or SC (Counter-Strike and Starcraft respectively) I can get better if I just don't pay attention. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen very often [http://forums.massassi.net/html/redface.gif]

I get exactly the same thing - especially in FPS games like UT. I think it's the stress. When you're -trying- to play well, every mistake you do will get you frustrated, and then you'll make more and more mistakes... however if you're not paying attention to those mistakes, it allows you to stay much more relaxed, and that's a big factor in those games.

I know that if I try too hard, I don't do well because I get really frustrated and the downward spiral starts. If I just keep it cool, I'll usually kick ***

My friend I play Soul Calibur against usually plays much worse when we're having a conversation, so if I'm having a **** night I ususally start a heated discussion on which Tom Clancy book to movie translation was the best, or something like that. Works every time [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

On a related note, I play games like MOH and BF1942 much better when I have Mp3s absolutely pumping over the sound of gunfire.

same here, except I have a fourth level. After about 6 or 7 hours of playing non-stop, I become one with my weapon. I get to a point where I can hit *any* target form *any* distance....

Same with a lot of things in life.
Car wrecks for instance: If a person is sober and is unable to avoid the collision and they see it coming they tend to tense up and brace themselves for the crash, making their body more rigid and consequently more vulnerable to injury. By contrast, a drunk driver generally is more likely to walk away unharmed because they weren't focusing on driving anyway and were unlikely to have seen the collision coming or to have been able to brace themselves for it in time even if they did.

I think about anything but the game when playing the Helicopter game that was re-posted here a couple days ago. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] only way to get good at it. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
