I hope this hasn't been posted yet...

Has anyone else heard about this?

If I would be able to test that, damn I would test it. Hopefully it isn't a hoax.

I wouldn't want to experiment after reading those articles. The guy in one messed up his comp. I have 160 GB drives in both my comps (140 GB left) that's more than sufficient. Anything really huge I'll put on DVD+RW discs.

After reading a little bit, it's not really worth while. If anyone is familar with the situation a while back about people turning Radeon 9500 Non-Pros into 9700 Pro's, it's kind of the same thing. It's the same VPU on both cards, but with the 9500s being ones that didn't make the "cut". A 9700 uses all 8 of it's pipelines, where as a 9500 uses only 4, so they just used bad 9700 cores and disabled some pipelines. The result being that some people could enable all the pipelines and effectivly get a 9700 Pro, but most people just got artifacts and distortion. Same thing with hard drives, bigger hard drives don't pass certain qualifications on all their sectors, so it gets downgraded to a smaller one.

2 250GB drives in a RAID0 configuration.

Make it 4 and you can have a Terabyte array. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Anyways, I don't have any problems with my 200 GB HD.

Serious problems that is.

one question,

why in god's name would anyone need a hard drive so bug it could hold an install of each game made between 1980 and 1998?

There are probably commerical uses that would gladly make use of large drives. As for home use these days, maybe someone has a tons of mp3s.

I bought a 120gb hard drive last year. It was full within month. Raw video is huge.

I plan on actully building a terabyte RAID array within the next year. It wont be long before its full too.

Yea, anime is huge too, even compressed. Although using Huffyuv compresses a little (lossless), it is still huge. (28gigs for a 640x480 1hour 30min movie, approx)

This is complete BS. As the second link mentions, all it is is a software bug, making the harddrive think there is 2 partitions for the same space. So anything you do on one would destroy or corrupt data on the other.

And someone will probably mention this, so I will reiterate from my other post:

When you buy a HD, you think you are getting a 120GB HD, right? Well you take it home, format it, go to windows, only to find it is only 111GB. What's up with that?

Simply put, you were tricked. Indeed, the hard drive IS 120GB, in 1000 byte counting. However, windows, along with nearly every OS I know of counts hard drive space in 1024bytes, as it SHOULD BE. So basically, it's a marketing gimmick that the companies can get away with. And it has been like this for YEARS ... I mean back when 6gigs were big. I had a 6.4GB HD, and it was really only 5.99GB. But indeed, there is really only 5.99GB of space, so don't let any articles persuade you otherwise.

I think somepeople are forgetting that the partion information and table of contents takes up a bit of space. Also all those wonderful hidden programs microsoft likes to install takes up some more.

You may notice each time you format a hard drive you can lose a little more space.

My 2 cents [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]
