Windows doesn't love me anymore...

I've had this happen every ten minutes or so for the last hour;

I'm just surfing on opera and suddenly I get an illegal operation error. I click "close" and then I get a fatal exception error. I click "close" and then I get a blue screen of death. I press enter and then it comes back to my desktop but I get another fatal exception error. I click "close" and then my desktop and taskbar disapear (but I can still see my wallpaper and sometimes WMP is still running). After that there's pretty much nothing I can do. I can't right-click or bring up the bar. I can ctrl+alt+del, but none of the programs listed seem to be malfuctioning.

I'm running windows 98SE. I recently purchased a new computer and reformatted my HD (two weeks ago). This problem only started today. I haven't installed anything new. I've never had any problems like this before.

Any ideas?

Oh yeah - my processor is an athlon 1.8. As I've heard, they tend to generate alot of heat. This is the first time since I have my new computer that it's been running for over 24 hours (over 48 in fact). Could this be a consequence of that?

I'd suggest Win2k or XP. They're BOTH stable as hell. Running Win98 on a recent computer... it's... well, not a good idea. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] I installed XP on a lady's computer not too long ago (upgrade from 98). She has a P4-2.4ghz. The performance gain was amazing, and her computer stopped constantly crashing.

What kind of cooling are you using?

My friend had problems with his 1700 overheating. He installed a Thermaltake Volcano7, and everything turned out fine after.

That is almost definitely the cause. Make sure it goes into sleep mode while you aren't using it, that should help.

An ATHLON not ATHLON XP? Good lord man, you almost need LN2 just to keep those suckers at 70 F! They run hotter than a Palomino overclocked 500 MHZ with no HSF. Yes that's almost DEFINITELY the cause. I could offer an opinion on cooling, but it'd be cheaper just to buy a new processor. May I suggest the Athlon XP 2600+ although that is OEM. Nice price, good performance, heck my processor's a beaut and it only runs at 2400+ PR. Besides, that one's barton. It's got nice temp control. Just food for thought.

Ditch Win98. Install a decent NT-based OS. YOU WILL COMPLY.

Plain old Athlons (Thundirbirds) only went up to 1.4 before the "XP" was appended. He is most certainly running an XP proccessor.

Buy a 2500, and Overclock that...It's almost a waste to buy any Barton higher than the 2500 series. Even if you buy like a 10 buck heatsink, I got mine to go up to 3200 speeds, and haven't broken 50 load.

I just installed a really kick *** heatsink, O/Ced my 2500 from 1.83 to about 2.25, and I don't break 43 load. I do have 5 case fans too, so that might help...

Actually, it's an Athlon XP 2500. I was looking at the wrong number. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif] Oh and I have two fans, one of which came with the processor and I'm told it's a really good one.

Anyways, I'm getting windows XP tomorrow. We'll see if it fixes the problem. I'd switch to linux, but I already know almost everything there is to know about windows, so I'd rather stick with a system I'm familiar with instead of starting from scratch.

I guess I'll also start shutting down my computer when I'm not using it.

Man.. if it's overheating now, summer's gonna be a nightmare!

You'd have to explain this to me. I fail to see how really. The exception being WinME. All you had to do to it was boot up and shut down and it'd kill itself.

The hardest action on a computer is booting. It strains every component. The less you reboot a system, the longer it lasts.

The thing you need to remember is, with Windows ME, Microsoft was able to get the boot time down to 30 seconds. That was almost as short as its uptime.

Shutting your computer down totally will not do any harm to it, jesus. I've done that with all three of my computers and all three of mine have been well-behaved. And yes, just upgrade windows, see if that fixes it..if not try getting a new fan.

Edit: And by the by, said first computer is from 1994 and second is from 1997. HA. And this one is from 2001. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I used to have the original fan on my heat sink. The one on top screwed in to the fins. Then I taped one to the side so that it blew acoss the channels of the fins.
Not sure if it made a difference 'cause I wasn't monitoring it but I think I'll set that up again and monitor it.
