I just got 10 PowerPC G3s and I plan to load linux on them. Is there any way I can make a distributed computing setup with them? Any info on this would be helpful..

10...PowerPC G3's... Even I would be happy at that, and I'm a militant anti-Mac. That's like a mini supercomputer right there.

10 G3s?!?!?! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/eek.gif]

1) Load them all up with Debian running 2.6.4
2) Go here.
3) Go here.
4) Try to find this book.
5) Nevermind, I found it here.
6) More info here.
7) And, just for kicks, go here.

GBK, thanks bunches. I really don't know anything about linux OR macs.. so I could use your help on this one, and maybe if you have something needing compiled or need something done on them I could take care of it for ya [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] Email or MSN msg me at ryan@sporkaudio.com, or AIM at CatHerder454

What would I be able to use this setup for anyway? Possibly converting video, say from VOB to AVI? Divx encoding would be great.

The Massassi Supercomputer?

Also I've got 6 200MHz macs that I might throw into the mix... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I'll post some pics later, I'll be converting half my closet into the server closet...

You may send a quarter of those machines my way. To hell with the fact that my mom won't like me bringing more computers into the house.

OK, it seems OpenMOSIX is sorta like what I need, but it only works on multiple processes. I'm looking for something that can run a single process over multiple nodes. Such as converting large WAVs to OGG (which I actually do a lot of for archiving purposes), or encoding video with divx. I've been looking on google for a good part of the day now, any help would be great.

How old are the G3's? How fast are they?

What on earth gave you that idea?

From their website...
Quote:
<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">openMosix is a Linux kernel extension for single-system image clustering. This kernel extension turns a network of ordinary computers into a supercomputer for Linux applications.

Once you have installed openMosix, the nodes in the cluster start talking to one another and the cluster adapts itself to the workload. Processes originating from any one node, if that node is too busy compared to others, can migrate to any other node. openMosix continuously attempts to optimize the resource allocation.

We achieve this with a kernel patch for Linux, creating a reliable, fast and cost-efficient SSI clustering platform that is linearly scalable and adaptive. With openMosix' Auto Discovery, a new node can be added while the cluster is running and the cluster will automatically begin to use the new resources.

There is no need to program applications specifically for openMosix. Since all openMosix extensions are inside the kernel, every Linux application automatically and transparently benefits from the distributed computing concept of openMosix. The cluster behaves much as does a Symmetric Multi-Processor, but this solution scales to well over a thousand nodes which can themselves be SMPs.</font>

OpenMosix can run on SMP platforms, but it isnt required.

If you have any specific questions, email me.

Multiple processes not processers. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] I want something where I can run LAME, converting one WAV to MP3, using all the systems. They are 233MHz for those who are wondering.
