So far I'm getting nothing but trouble. Half the time I reboot it resets my refresh rate to 60hz or my resolution to 1024x768. Then after a few minutes, I get an error message asking me to send a bug report, or a message saying windows is shutting down in 30 seconds and there's nothing I can do to stop it! If I try to update, it tells me my CD key is invalid.

Bleh. Never use the upgrade feature. It creates more redundancies than a Klingon genetic code.

Fresh installs are best, because that means only the files that are needed for one OS are present, not for two or more.

Yeah. Windows slowly corrupts your computer until it is unusbale. Upgrading is like starting off already half corrupted. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Ok, I think I've narrowed down two possible causes of the bugs.

I need to know how to:

Deactivate remote procedure call
Deactivate messenger

Why don't you do a windows update?

Sounds like MSBlast. Get to Windows Update, now.

You can search Microsoft for the file, I'm pretty sure they have a copy seperate from Windows Update. They did this because people didn't have enough time to download it before their computer shut down.

Since you upgraded, maybe use the CD key of the first windows?

Another example of someone going through all the hoops to buy/install MS software, but getting the run-around when he needs updates. People wonder why I'm opposed to cd keys and the idea that people are guilty until proven innocent. THIS IS WHY.

Yeah... I would've tried my old 98 CD key if only it would've asked me for it. It just tells me it's invalid and shuts down install. However I managed to install the rest of the update by skipping the service pack. I'm gonna wait a while now and see if it keeps doing it. It seemed to be installing fine so I went upstairs and had something to eat. When I came back there was no "install complete" message or anything like that... and it didn't ask me to reboot. That seems rather odd.

Yah you had MSBlast, a crappy crappy virus which is everywhere. But other than that XP runs nicely. Maybe the version you bought isn't compatible with SP1, there are some out there that aren't, and might have said such in the package. This sucks, because SP1 fixes a LOT of stuff (shut up linux people, whether you like it or not it DOES) and might fix some of your problems. XP's stable though, moreso than any other OS I've run to date...obviously I haven't run Linux yet. But once you get XP going, it almost never crashes (for me anyways--2 months and counting)

I dunno.. maybe it's gonna be better if I ever find a way to fix all these bugs.. but so far it's a nightmare. I get nothing but trouble! Now for some reason windows media player keeps skipping...

I miss 98 [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

You're going to need XP drivers for you video card and other hardware. That should help with some of the problems

You really should take their advice and start over. It's a well known fact that upgrades of MS software don't work that well, it's a wonder they even offer them. Oh wait, they still insist their software is stable, fast, and secure. *sigh*

You know, maybe I'll just reformat all of C: and reinstall all my system from scratch just to be sure.

MS makes alot more money from upgrades than anything else. Simply because in order for an upgrade of a product to work, you need to have had purchased an older version of the same product already.

Personally, I vastly prefer the upgrade method of downling patches, patching the source, and recompiling.... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Good plan... ANd yeah, don't let this experience turn you off from XP... It's honestly quite good. I have a few times ran my computer for like... 3 months straight without it crashing, and without even rebooting, and I had no problems... (Using RAM Idle). From what I know of 98 SE, you can't do that.

Yeah but it's a bunch of crap I probably should reinstall anyways. My disk is partitioned, so I'll just reformat C: and I keep all my games and mp3s on D:

Hopefully things work out for ya bud! And yah, if you plan on leaving your comp on for long periods of time (which you should, saves comp hardware a lot of stress) use something like RAMBooster or RAMIdle found at none other than www.downloads.com . They fix the problems with a RAM leak that windows have, and run in the systray. Good luck.

Did you find out how to disable messenger and the other thing there that you wanted to disable?

Control Panel > Administartive Tools > Services.
Scroll down 'til you find Messenger. Right click and click Properties. Stop the service and from the drop down menu choose 'Disable' so that it won't start up again.

www.blackviper.com will tell you more of what you can turn off and still run (left hand sude about half way down).
