Bah, would you believe I just spent 9 hours downloading the 9.2 isos last week?

Yes, yes I would [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Downloading from files.bigpond.com at a speed of...340kbs. Bloody useless cable.

Youd think so, but no. I never cared much for Mandrake.

Yeah, Mandrake is like a big fat goose with RPM lard pouring out of it's ***.

I have a certain softspot for Mandrake, as it's the first distro I ever really used. But yeah... I don't really care for it any more.

Mandrake gave me a lot of trouble. Its harddrake utility was excellent, though.

Well I got it installed now...its not bad. It worked with my 9600XT for once...every other bloody distro didnt and I couldnt figure out how to update Xfree86 either.

I installed it, and got this.

*sigh* X just gives me a blank screen. I don't want to use a VGA cable, because I get ghosting. MandrakeExpert is, well, horrible. Just try searching for something. A search for DVI brings back "hlp me plzzzzzz aDVIse", the results in all lowercase letters, some including hundreds of lines of logs and gibberish. And I'm certainly not going to buy a membership to their club if I can't even get X running. *sigh* So, I think, maybe Debian. But Debian's hardware database is hopelessly out-of-date. So I think, maybe Knoppix. But Knoppix is still on 2.4.x. So I think, maybe Gentoo. But Gentoo takes many hours to install, and requires a lot of manual configuration. You learn a lot, I suppose, but I actually use my computer, ya know? If I had another one to install Gentoo on, maybe I'd give it a shot.

And the worst part is...it works on Windows. Bah! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I want to switch, I'm tired of Windows' blue screens (even in Win2K, about 10% of the time I boot up I get a stop error with "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and have to either reboot a few times, or wait the 10 minutes it takes to boot into safe mode, and then back into regular mode).

*ahem* Sorry, needed to rant a bit. Don't lunch me because the thread is a few days old. ...Did I say lunch? Well, that's what happens when you don't get breakfast, I guess. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I've never had a problem with XP. Did some with 2k, though. Gentoo doesn't take too long to install though, according to my linux friend. If you're worried about that, try Slack, though I dunno if you'll fare any better.

It's a driver problem. There was a solution I read about a while ago, but I forget what it was. Try googling it.

(I used to get it while using BitTorrent with my Linksys network card. Linksys drivers are pure crap.)

How did you fix that problem, Jon? New card?

Are you using the default 'nv' driver that comes with X? If so, try installing the official NVidia drivers. My GF4 Ti4600 gives me problems when using the DVI and the nv driver. I can't get anything to show up on the screen. Installing the NVidia drivers fixes it up for me. I wish I knew a workaround to keep using the nv drivers so that you don't have a blank screen to start out with.

Can you configure mandrake to not install the graphical display manager? That way, you can startx manually and actually see the error messages. You can also try installing the nvidia drivers, they probably have an option for the dvi cable (I don't know what that is or why I would want to use it). You can see which driver it's trying to use by looking at your XF86Config or XF86Config-4 file (in linux, it's in /etc/X11/). Did you try running a search on google for "blank screen X DVI" or something?

The code for specifiying your flat-panel is:

Code:
    Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP"

in your GF4 Device secion of XF86Config(-4).

I just wish you could specifiy such things during install, or have it autodetect it somehow.

I bought a Sony 17" monitor back in ... hrm, 1999? Maybe 1998? Anyway, it's worked flawlessly since then. I have no plans on replacing it till it dies. Of course, that may not happen for a while, since the the 15" one I bought 3 years prior still works perfectly, too. Oh, and the picture quality on both of them is much better than most new monitors.

I have looked into flat screen monitors, but the displays at Costco and Best Buy are all hooked up to one signal somehow, and they all look extremely blurry. No doubt it's because they're not running at their native resolution, but I would hate to buy something I can't at least make sure isn't blurry at first.

Plus, a lot of people tell me stuff isn't blurry to them, when it IS blurry to me, so I can't take people's recommendations without looking for myself.

How good are flat panels for gaming, anyway?
