This sucks. All for an MIP that I'm innocent of.

Some of your might remember me posting about this back in October, when I actually GOT the MIP. Well, I just went for a Preliminary hearing, and I forgot what they called it, but basically, instead of pleading guilty, paying the fine, and it being on my record, or going to trial and fighting it, I'm gonna have to pay the fine, get 90 days probation, and do about 8 hours community service, plus a 6-8 hour class on MIP or something, and it will be dismissed, so it won't go on my record.

Still, this is gonna be a pain in the *** to work into my schedule. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/mad.gif]

How large is the fine? Just be glad you didn't get several HUNDRED hours of community service, as some people I know have gotten for a simpyl M.I.P.

[edit]Oops. How silly of me; the fine is listed in the subject of the thread![/edit]

But seriously, good luck with that..

No Ric, it was something else. Where do you think I get my PCP? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Seriously though, although it sucks, the money is going to be the hardest thing to do. Parting with that much cash for nothing is really sad. The 8 hours will be nothing and the probation is pretty much you going to your officer, getting interviewed, and leaving. I think.

Exactly, although we haven't been presented with the witnesses, the evidence, and whatnot.

You taking this plea thing is practically admitting guilt. What evidience would they have had if they had gone to trial? The burden of proof is on the prosecution and unless they have people that can testify that you had alcohol in your had when you were cited, they have no case what so ever. I suppose it's too late for that though.

Prosecutors tend to like Plea Bargains; they don't need any more work to convict you, and you still get most of the original punishment.

Hmm... I've never seen anyone getting prosecuted for alcohol possesion over here. I've seen like 14 year olds get caught by the police with alcohol but they only ever confiscate it then move the kids along...

The State of Michigan has ludicrous laws regarding such things. They have a thing called "mandatory sentencing". In other words, if you're caught with any illegal drugs at all (even a trace), you get a minimum of 1 day of jail. At 30 grams (~1 ounce), it's up to a minimum of 1 year of jail. At 500 grams (~1 pound), it's 20 years to life without parole (Michigan doesn't have capital punichment, unlike many of the other states). That's a lot of money going out for jail and prison costs...

Yeah, the prisons are overflowing due to the tough drug laws, which obviously aren't working.

Do you live in Michigan? I'm sarcastically proud to live here, given that it has both the highest obesity rate in the nation (I have a normal BMI, on the other hand), and the highest unemployment rate (I believe it was over 7% at the last count).

Did anyone hear that episode of Loveline where those 10-15 people bought a pound of pot a week? That was an interesting one..

Well Connection Problem, i guess that's better than them /drinking/ it in front of you.
JudgeDredd, i think what youre looking for is 'deferred ajudication', i got one for a careless backing thing in a parking lot [the physics of how i hit this car elude me to this day, the angles were pure escher-space], basically just had to be an upstanding citizen for a year [no dealing crack or DUI or such], which is really easy because i'm not precisely a non-upstanding citizen generally anyways, then sign a paper at the end of it and drop it off at the courthouse.
