As I have discovered, Tif is the worst format on the face of the planet. Nothing opens it, not even photoshop! (even thought the school only has 5.0)

Ive downloaded two programs from download.com but one of them put a stamp over the entire image because it was a trial, the other one puts it in some mystery folder that doesnt exist anywhere on the drive....

If anyone knows a FREEWARE converter that is simple and exports to my specified location, thatd be great....

I don't have the original setup program but YEARS ago I downloaded a shareware/demo version of Paint Shop Pro. What I've been doing for years, whenever I do a system restore, is "reinstall" the entire zipped program folder. It doesn't seem to rely on any registry entry because I have used this program in this manner on three different machines (at least) over the years. The only problem is that whenever you open it it will tell you which day of your trial use you are on. Since it's just zipped up the way it was that day, it will start on some number like 37. But, the program never becomes non-fully functional. It just tried to get you to buy it by bugging you everytime you open it. I still use it regularly and it is perfect for converting to and from many formats, including tif, and resizing. I don't think there is anything wrong with offering you a copy, if you'd like, since it was a freely distributed program to begin with. Total, its just over 3 MB and will run right it whatever folder you unzip it to.

I downloaded GIMP a long time back. I didn't have a chance to get used to it. I still use PSP for simple resizing or converting. I use PhotoDraw for other stuff.

As far as tifs are concerned, I love em. You can use em to create masks from 3d programs, which is useful for using 3d in 2d graphics.

I use ACDSee... It's not freeware, but the free trial is full-power... Enough to justify the $50US price tag...

http://www.acdsystems.com/English/Products/ACDSee/index.htm

As far as I know, it converts EVERY format of image, as long as they aren't ludicrously rare. It does TIFFs, TGAs, PCXs, and even can create pallettized 4 or 8-bit BMPs. The list of actual formats is more than 30, and it supports all forms, be they palletized, or anywhere from 1-bit to 24-bit.

Project Dogwaffle

Though I prefer it for drawing rather than image editing. For editing GIMP owns all.

I perfer my PSP5 I got FOR FREE with my old 56K modem. Compresses images fast and easy, and that's all I need it to do. When I have something I really want to make, I use photoshop instead.

GIMP Installer

You also need the GTK runtime environment. Here

If you want to save .gifs, and you live in a country where the patent does not apply, then you need this file.

Photoshop 5 most definatly opens tif files.

Either someone put a different extention on it, or your file is corrupted, or something else. Last time I checked though, Photoshop 5 opened them. Hell, I have a copy of Photoshop 3 laying around that I put on my Powerbook 109CS that'll open them.

The nice thing about irfanview is that it can tell with a file extension is wrong for the type of image the file contains. And it will open it if possible, and notify you of the correct extension.
