And that is why you never speak of religion in a bar. Or perhaps at all.

This just proves again that religion brings out the worst in people.

Usually, I have a great time debating the truth of any and all religion, but even I would never say something like that. I don't think any Athiest would. That entire comment has not been thought through at all. If anything, religion does bring out the best in everyone. To debate that would be your own bias of disagreeing with some of their beliefs, and not in a domestic dispute between a couple that you know nothing about. And you also know nothing about what was actually discussed in their argument that lead to the violence. For all we know, he could have made some very offensive remarks towards her religion that may have offended her. (Assuming he started the argument.. I'm not sure, did the article mention if they were both of the same religious beliefs?)

Why is it that most religions teach people to respect each other and not fight but very few follow the beliefs they are "defending"

I would, with the addendum that it can bring out the worst in everyone. And there are often cases where it has.

Just out of interest, what would be these "worst" qualities you would say religion brings out in people?

Actually, it proves that ignorance of religion brings out the worst in people. Take the Spanish Inquisitions, for example: a very Christian example. *cough* [http://forums.massassi.net/html/rolleyes.gif]

It is incredibly divisive, taking history into account. Recent examples include the progressing schism in the Anglican Church because of differing religious views, the Ten Commandments monument in Alabama, etc.

So once again, you're judging certain groups of Christians for being "un-Christian" because their interpretation differed from yours?

If anything, I'd say this proves that two people out there somewhere have some hot tempers.

Thanks, Fox. Just wanted to get an idea of your standpoint.

My response to DogsRool's comment would have been the same as Fox's.

If I'm judging, what did I judge them as?

I simply said they were ignorant of their religion, which implies that I still considered them Christians, despite their obvious misconceptions. (Love thy enemy, love thy neighbor as thyself, etc. Nowhere does the Bible tell you to hate your fellow man... or stab them with sissors. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif])

I like talking about/debating religion/philosophy, as exploring something you don't know and can't see or touch sharpens the intellect and tends to really help critical thinking if you go about it the right way.
