I think this is mainly a problem associated with XP, at least, I think it's similar.

I'm running Win2k, and as I sit here, all of a sudden (this is while I'm online mind you) a pop-up window that says "Messenger Service" in the titlebar comes up. The message, which I don't think I'll quote directly, says something similar to the following, "Message from *insert name here* to You on 3/20/2004 3:25:58 PM *next few lines are message*" at the bottom is an OK button.

WTF is this? I think I've had it happen only 3 times prior to this, once on WinME, and another time quite awhile back after I put Win2k on this box, it flashed by fast becuase I think I clicked right where the OK button was as it came up, I meant to click a link.

I'm going to run a Spyware search momentarily, but what else can it be that I can shut-down? I don't exactly like the idea that people can send crap like this to me. Makes me paranoid.

two way to stop it that I know of

A: *"go to Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative Tools > Services.
Scroll down until you get to Messenger service. Right click and then click properties. Click 'Stop' and choose Disable from the dropdown menu (it should be set to Automatic right now which is the install default."

Getting a firewall in this case is like having a door and erecting a brickwall in front of it instead of simply closing it

But whatever floats your boat

For anyone that wants to know, the simple solution is:

Start > Run > type:

net stop messenger && sc config messenger start= demand
