filesharing and why I hate it
2004-03-20, 2:19 PM #1
I hate filesharing. Every time I attempt to get a file this way I get viciously RAPED in every possible way. I'm currently using bittorrent to download a 1.4GB file. My upload it going at 20 KB/s constantly. My max uplaod capability is 25. Do you know what my download it going at? ZERO. NOTHING. 48 hours ago I started this download. I'm now at 84% with an estimated 25 and a half hours to go. WHAT MORON INVENTED THIS?

It always amazes me how much people will complain about services that they get for free, or are illegal. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I prefer "BuyItYourself v2.1"

I've never had any problems with it, and the customer support is much better than any other file sharing program.

Do you have router? firewall?

There are many reasons why your download could be crippled

(you DID check whether there are any seeds? or any full copy floating around even)

Of course it could just be that you're saturating your upload and therefore unable to request data very fast...

Or just no one is sharing, but I hear a lot of people complaining about slow downloads when it's their fault for letting their upload get saturated.
2004-03-20, 3:07 PM #11
No, the file is not illegal, I am very much opposed to that kind of thing.

There are plenty of seeds, yes. I don't think my upload is saturated, like I said, my maximum capacity is 25 and my actual upload is hovering between 15 and 20...is that still too much?

I do have a router, what kinds of problems could that cause?

Well are you on some dedicated connection or are you using something shared like cable where your bandwidth is more likely to fluctuate?

Of course usually if your upload was saturated, you'd still be downloading, just really slow...

So what is it already?

Well, it is going, just very slow. It picked up a few minutes ago quite a bit, higher than it has for the last 2 days, near the 20KB/s mark. Maybe I jsut caught it during a lull or some such wierd happening...still a bit slow, but whatever. I am on cable but I doubt my bandwidth would fluctuate like that.

As to what the file is, that's none of your business. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] It's a movie that I own on VHS (2 copies of it, actually) but would like to watch on my computer (better speakers). So I guess that's technically illegal, isn't it? The alws ahve been fluctuating so much with all the controversy and stuff that i just stopped paying attention.

Well I would say cap your upload at like 10k or 15k and see if that helps any. I assume the BT client you're using had an upload cap option?
2004-03-20, 4:11 PM #18
So what if its illegal?

People who download files are patriots, not criminals. America was founded on rebellion, not corporate greed.

Companies are so greedy that I'm sure that some people download all they can out of pure spite.

I mean, look at autocad 2004. They stream a 500 mb demo to your computer because they don't trust you enough to give you a traditional download. You can order a trial cdrom, but you still basically have to PAY to use the demo b/c of shipping charges.

you have to have broadband to use the streamed demo (which was very unstable on my comp, btw), so they are conveniently alienating much of their 56k market audience by that paranoid measure alone.

Pagewizard, filesharing illegal files is possibly the most UNamerican thing imaginable. It's quite the OPPOSITE of capitalism. It's COMMUNISM. Plain and simple.

Why should I take the RIAA's word for it?

They never tell you that they've been ripping off and exploiting their assets (err... artists) for years. This has been debated many times here on these forums, but some people don't see past the tripe that the RIAAS propagaganda machine has been feeding them.

I would receive great (almost orgasmic, hehe) pleasure from seeing the Riaa come crashing down in flames. Any company that sues 12 year old kids receives utterly no pity from me.

I'm not defending the RIAA, I'm just saying that it's illegal and generally plain wrong. Anyway, suing 12 year olds is jsut fine with me, maybe they should have thought twice before they started stealing.

Why is it wrong?

Its wrong because you're getting something which legally isnt yours. Even if the RIAA is ripping off the artists (which I doubt, and even if the artists are getting ripped off they are still making more than I could every hope to make), that in no way gives you any right to rip off the RIAA. And if you really enjoyed music, you would be more than willing to buy it. Maybe the cost of CDs is too high, but that does not make downloading music any more 'legal' or 'morally right.'

More importantly, will Rachel stay in the country and get back together with Ross (again?), will Joey ever find true love? Will Monica ever stop being irritating? Will Chandler continue being such a cool guy?

How dare you counter the almighty RIAA! You shall be viciously prosecuted for downloading 3 songs! We will rape every dollar from all your accounts, your parent's accounts, your friend's account, your cousin on your mother's side twice removed accounts! We need the funds to continue our distribution of our mind controlling audio known as "music."
