Now I've got more reason to get one, though I hope the media isn't too outrageously priced to start off.

I'm sure I'm not the only recent purchaser of an older style dvd burner going '****!'

nice, so we can finally make backups of our retail 8gb dvd discs without having to resort to divx compression.

I guess this means that when I finally decide to get all the components for a new system together, a normal DVD burner will be ALOT cheaper. Until now I'd been planning on a DVD reader.

Ehh, well, not really too expensive. $230, which is about the cost of an external Sony 8x burner. Also this does 8x -R too, which I haven't noticed anywhere else yet.

you meen, Americans are actual accepting that dual layer single sided discs are better than double sided single layer discs. (refering to the fact that americans prefer a long break to flip thier discs as opposed to a breif puase for layer tansition.

What's that supposed to mean? I can't think of a single person who likes double-sided discs, and they're not very common these days...

I LOVE two sided disks!!!
There is no reason to have more than one DVD disk for extra features, plus most of the double sided disks give the option of Widescreen OR fullscreen!!

NOTE TO COMPANIES: 1 disk is cheaper with 2 sides than 2 disks! Saves packaging cost too! plus people are likely to scratch them so they'll buy a NEW copy! Plus, widescreen/fullscreen dvd sales/rentals are dumb! ONE MASTER COPY, damnit!!!

I think its the manufacturers that cause the problem, its probably easier and cheaper to burn double-sided. i for one would prefer a double-layer to double sided, but i've never seen a double-layer disk. However, i've only seen a double-sided about twice.

..... Come again? The only movies I can think of which force you to take a long break are Pearl Harbor and Schindler's List.. Double-sided discs are, as previously noted, usually used to present the movie in both fullscreen and widescreen, or to condense two-disc sets into one. Hell, even Patton which was originally presented with an intermission is still a one-sided DVD.

Or you could use DVDShrink to compress your 8GB dual-layered DVD's to fit on one DVD-R for backup purposes. True, there is a quality decrease, but so is there with DivX compression.

mscbuck, is there a chance you may have missed Pagewizard's point entirely?

He's saying he'll finally be able to make backups WITHOUT any form of lossy compression.
