Strange FTP Problems
2004-03-20, 4:02 PM #1
So I've got a makeshift server in my basement:

Pentium II - 450 mhz
352 mb RAM
Windows XP Home
8gb hard drive (that's got some serious issues)
SBC DSL connection
Router (192.168.0.1)

The program I'm using for FTP hosting is Titan FTP, the latest build. The issue is that no matter what I do, I cannot get anyone to be able to connect and browse my server, not even another computer connected to my router. I've done the port forwarding of 20-21 for FTP and 10000-10050 for PASV, and I've even followed the whole tutorial with the program for using it with a router/dsl/cable. The strange thing is that it went down without me touching it, went back up still without me touching it, and then down again the same way. What the hell is wrong with this thing?

Try Bulletproof FTP server.

Run a search on google and try it.

Wait, wait, wait, your using XP home as a server? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/confused.gif]

I know Im gonna get flamed for this, but Ive gotta say it - Put linux on that thing. Install Redhat, click 3 or 4 times, and bingo, a running FTP server. Trying to set up XP Home as a server is just asking for trouble.

Can you get to the server from the machine that's running it?

Yah, I can get to it from the same machine by going ftp://192.168.0.5 in IE (no projectiles please).

The reason I haven't gone linux yet is that the CD that I used to install XP has a huge crack down it and doesn't work anymore. It makes me hessitant to just jump into Linux, but don't doubt it, I have been considering it. So GBK, is Redhat free?

LINUX is free. That's why it's open source. www.linuxiso.org I believe is the site

Yes. Head over to LinuxISO and click on the Redhat button, then download the 3 disks to Redhat 9.0. Its a decent server OS, I run my server with it...

GBK is right. XP with with a firewall is like a house with the front door locked...oh and there isn't a back door. Did I mention the front doog has one of those little doggy doors?

Well, my Redhat 9 download has about 4 hours left, so I was wondering:

Is setup simple, once I get the iso's burned?

and:

I heard Linux has a different drive setup, like instead of c: and d: and such. How's that work?

also:

The hard drive I'm on right now has 3 partitions of something that isn't NTFS from an old Windows 95 install, will I have to reformat?

Well, after attempting to install, it couldn't reformat my hard drive because it makes a horrible tick-tock noise [not the least bit suprising, BTW], and just plain sucks. So I set up a new one and am about to try again, but I have some quick questions about the installation:

X, KDE, and GNOME. I've only heard of KDE and GNOME, so what exactly are they?

Which should I install/use?
