Most Australian's I talk to think I'm American, most American's I talk to think I live with a kangaroo. :/ Meh.
American's love Irwin because his character basis begun with Crockadile Dundee, a slighty exaggerated portrayal of a "crok hunter", a simple bloke from outback Australia. Irwin just takes it to a higher level of exaggeration to attract the oversea's crowds that have no idea that Australians are really very simular to themselves, apart from a very, VERY mild difference in accent - nothing near what Irwin tries to portray, except for in some remote outback parts of the country, in which characters like Crokadile Dundee originated. I'd describe the difference in accent being a very blurred line between an English accent and a general American accent.
If you knew of people like the "Bushtacker Man" and the Leyland Brothers, as UGG mentioned, you'd realize why we don't like Irwin. All he's doing is adding fule to the fire of ignorant forigners thinking that our country is filled with weird talking folk that wrestle croks for a living. If you want that sort of Adventure, then be prepared for a good 7 hour [or 3 day, depending on how "adventurous" you are] car trip through desert country, or an over-priced ticket to Irwin's crappy "zoo" (read: circus).
Frankly, I think it was better when he was just a local boy from Darwin putting on a silly show for the locals and the occasional tourists that passed through the area. Now it's just ridiculous.
