Help me get started with Linux!!!

I'm downloading Redhat 9 now from linuxiso.org and I plan to install it on a separate partition from winxp. (I've heard that R.H. is the easiest to learn and you can switch distros really easy, right?).

While i'm waiting for the downloads, I need to know the following things: (I know absolutely nothing about using linux at this point.

1. how do I install? It it an automated install or do I have to walk it through step by step?

What software is the best for the following:

1. Web browsing (linux firefox is already on my download list)

2. html editing

3. graphics (both vector and pixel)

4. FTP

3. p2p :evil grin:

6. any other must-have software?

Also, is WineX a default feature, or do I need to download it seperately?

Also, which distro do you prefer?

1: Opera and Lynx [or Links, i know that the most recent version of Links i used at least supports frames instead of showing the page links to each frame to browse, i haven't looked at the latest Lynx yet, but i like Lynx in general for being far more colourful [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]]
2: Bluefish
3: The Gimp [/the/ linux standard for graphics]

WineX is a seperate thing you need to install, someday i may actually get around to getting it reinstalled and figuring out how to use it. But even GBK suggests Windows for gaming [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Oh and there is a technology forum for these sorts of things [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Don't be deluded by any other endings, they're all fake, with malicious intent to deceive, or just motivated by excessive optimism if not by downright sentimentality. Yes, everything except games are free for Linux. Google is your friend. Sourceforge.net isn't far behind either [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Moving to the technology forum...

General rule of thumb to follow: If the thread is going to be using actual instructions on how to use technology, please use the technology forum.
