Kopete. Its bloody sweet, supports *all* the major protocols, even IRC.

GAIM sucks. I had issues with it esp connecting to Yahoo. I didn't like overall the interface of GAIM. I use Kopete although it doesn't seem to support file xfer...unless I missed a compile setting.

GAIM supports file xfer, although I'm unsure about Direct IM...

Last i understood, Gaim still didn't support file xfer. At least under icq i think it was, though icq's just a horrid buggy old protocol in general, aim while being all evil aol-spawn at least works really well in general, and since aim owns icq now it's kinda pointless to use icq anymore though i can't proselytize my icq people to use aim.

Naim is lovely when youre working in a console, i'm rather fond of it currently as i'm still working on building my gentoo 2004.0 boot again.

For irc xchat or B*tchX, though can do those in naim and gaim [i think] as well.

On a similar note, what's the deal with jabber, like i guess it's a way popular alternative protocol, i just don't quite understand how it works, like does everyone you know need to be on the same server, or what, like is it like irc in that regards or.. ??

Think of Jabber as IM for e-mail. No, you don't have to be on the same server as other people. You can even run your own personal server, if you want.
