I know that Dawn of the Dead and Starsky and Hutch were the big movies of the last couple weekends, both of which I have to see sometime soon, but I've been seeing lots of B-movies lately. Namely Hidalgo, Secret Window, and Eternal Sunshine.
Secret window sucked BTW, it's worth catching on TV, not worth 7 bucks or so for a ticket.
Basically, I saw Eternal Sunshine last friday, and I must say, it was an awesome movie.
I haven't seen the Majestic yet, but this is some of Cerrey's best serious acting, IE un-slapstick or stupid humor, that I've seen. (Granted, his slapstick/stupid humor is great 90% of the time) The truman show had elements of his comedy, as he had bits of craziness in his character (IE: MARDI GRAS! WHAHAHA!), but here I don't remember seeing much more than his character. He was still Jim Carrey, just a less slapstick Jim Carrey. That's a plus and a step forward for him.
NOW, to the movie. It's fabulous. It's a little pulpy. It's out there. It's extremely entertaining. You have to think hard and pay attention to figure out what's going on in many parts. It's an excellent dramatic movie. It does have it's funny parts as well, but they're generally scripted or sarcastic moments, not the craziness that we find in most of Carrey's films. They seem to be forms of humor that are suited for Jim Carrey too.
He also has *gasp* serious moments where he gets angry, uses profanity. serious moments where he gets sad and emotional. Serious moments where he's happy and laughing. Yet his slapstick-wierdness-carrey-ism is always found inside of his character.
Kate Winslet performs excellently. I can't think of many characters in Hollywood films that are similar to hers, especially in films of the last decade or so. She pulls her role off very well. Don't look for the woman I secretly love deal, somewhere, I have to find her, james bond girl type deal. She is impulsive, funny, and very different from typical female roles. Her character is essential to the movie, and she does a very good job playing it.
Next I'll hit the music. I don't want to ruin too much about the music, but throughout most of the movie, the music was very random. It didn't follow the typical styles of music. I found it to suit the movie very well, but it isn't quite the kind you might listen to leisurely, but it was very good in relation to the movie.
The movie starts off without a very un-typical introduction, it kinda just starts. You don't know why what's going on is going on, but you have a good time following what's happening. Nothing is explained, but it's fun to see what's going on. The great thing about the movie is that you have to think back to understand things taht happened previously, instead of things being set up for you. Things just happen, kinda like in real life. You find a hammer, but you don't know how it got on your floor. You don't go backtrack how the hammer got there in a series of investigative acts in real life, you just kinda move on or find the carpenter or the toolbox. This might be an inappropriate analogy or something, but take my word for it, the movie is awesome. When it's over, you'll understand everything, for the most part. Some things may require re-watching to figure out minor details, but the overall plot and story makes sense by the end.
My opinion:
You'll be glad you spent money on the movie. Don't go in looking for a typical Jim Carrey movie, go in looking for a different kind of movie that just happens to star Jim Carrey. You'll love it. My opinion anyway.
Has anyone else seen it? what are your thoughts?
