Second Horizons Impressions

I mentioned at some point in the past that I had purchased Horizons. I was excited because it seemed really fun... at first.

The problem is that I am level 14 now and I have come across absolutely NO real content. I haven't come across any special item quests, no way to build spells other than buying them or finding them randomly on enemies, etc. I have fought my way through countless battles and the only reward is "next level."

After playing Asheron's Call, where at the end of every tunnel or maze or cave there was a cool beast and a prize (even if I couldn't use it, at least I accomplished something), this game is more draining than anything. Sure, it's fun hanging out with your buddies and fighting monsters, but that's virtually all there is to the game!

The crafting schools are mildly interesting, but they remind me of Warcraft 1: go mine some rocks and chop some trees.

The cities are REALLY cool. There are epic sized cities, and one dragon city is literally in the center of a volcano - the graphics are stunning.

However, I just can't help feeling that there's nothing to this game, like, there's no point to having an online component if the whole object of the game is to kill NPCs [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

As an experienced MMORPGer, i know that feeling well. It occurs when the game lost it's charm for you, and you are no longer hungry for the content of it. Take a break and play with something else for 2-3 days, and try to play afterwards. If you wont feel that you miss the game, then you will have to find a new one.

Now that you're out of the low levels, you've hit the remarkable period in a character's life called the "mid-level drag". Many players feel that powerleveling through the mid-levels will solve the total lack of content and they'll be able to have fun in the game again.

Then they hit the high level drag, but just keep on going. Next thing you know, you've become a pasty, annoying adolescent griefer who drags his parents to Horizons Player Luncheons in Boston and exploits quests just to see his name appear in server-wide annoucements.

In short, you should quit the game before it's too late.

I had SWG... then I realized it suffered from the same deal, except worse.

The charm for AC lasted through level 35 for me. Hell, the only reason I stopped playing was because MS switched to PASSPORT accounts, and I refuse to sign up for one. AC had zillions of quests for every level range, I never power levelled, I was always out doing stuff and exploring stuff. The point is, when I went out and explored, there was always SOMETHING out there, something other than some monsters. There were caves with cool items at the end or portals to places I had never been before.

I played EQ years ago and had a blast, but later moved on to DAoC. I've been playing DAoC on and off for around 2 years now, and the only thing that keeps me going is the new content that comes out with each expansion (retail and free), and RvR. WoW looks promising, but there's not much out regarding their RvR system yet, and I believe that is what will make or break upcoming MMORPG's.

I agree with Terra111, take a few days off, and see if that renews your craving. I've taken as much as a few months off of DAoC and when I go back, my excitement lasts for quite some time (I'm in one of those phases now).

MMO games are slowly going in the right direction though. Personally, I can't wait until it stops being so turn-based. There are a few MMO games that aren't so turn-based (Planetside etc), but I want hand-to-hand Braveheart battles, where we can exercise real combat skill!

Get FFXI.

There are missions, which raise your rank in the game. You can start off doing missions at level one, although most wait till level three, when you can actually kill something.

There are also hundreds upon hundreds of quests that you can do for items and cash, not counting the fame that is needed later in the game. FFXI is one of the few games that ties to storyline to gameplay via the quests, and nearly forces you to do those quests. You don't HAVE to, but you're much better off.

Not to mention, to encourage parties, a lot of missions require you to form a party, or even a 18 person alliance. Those are serious fun.

I think Fishstickz will back me up on this... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I'm the same way with Morrowind, I play nearly non-stop for a week or so, then feel like the game has serious wang-suckage problems. A week or two later I'm crawling back to the shores of Vvardenfell and Solstheim. As cool and amazing as the game is - best RPG ever, in my opinion - most of the quests are the same thing, with different creatures or items. Basically I agree with Terra111, except for the whole Online thing, never played a MMORPG myself.
