It's sad that it's 2004, and I just got done ordering a modem...

Slow rural expansion sucks in some cases... If you'd have asked me ~8 years ago if I'd still be using dial-up, I'd have probably called you a nut-job...

So since my last good hardware modem got fried a while back and ever since I've been using a crappy controllerless modem, I figured its time I stop punishing myself quite as much...

What's even sadder is that the good US Robotics hardware modems are still quite pricey, heh.

Theyll get even more pricey as time wares on, and as true hardware modems become more rare.

It's just so much cheaper to make software modems.

Most people (american gamers) dont realize that the vast majority of internet users are still on dial up. That may not be true for the gaming community, but you should take comfort that in the broader scheme of things, you aren't alone by far. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Step 1: Buy small plot of land within city limits
Step 2: Build a shack on that small plot of land
Step 3: Have that shack set up with a broadband connection
Step 4: Set up a wireless point at your house and beam previously mentioned shacks internet to your house
Problem solved! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I am also deprived of DSL [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif] I couldn't get it when it first came to town, and I can't get it after the recent expansion. EVERY friend I have in town can, and has got it, but my little pocket has been passed over again......Bell Canada is making quite an enemy out of me!

I'm counting the days till August, when I get to move from tiny pipe, to massively huge college pipe.

And yeah GBK, I've noticed what you said, hardware modems are a lot more rare than they used to be. Most people see $10 modem or $60 modem and jump on the cheap one instantly, not knowning the $10 one is controllerless and the $60 one is really much better.

Main reason I finally got around to buying a new one is Battlefield Vietnam's a bit iffy on this modem, and my good hardware modems always gave me a much stabler, better connection for gaming.

Not to mention finding Linux drivers for the controllerless modem I have in here now is a pain in the *** . Found some a long time ago, and came back later after reinstalling to find that place actually charges for Linux drivers, lol.

All a good hacker needs is a 18.8 modem and they could still cause billions of dollars worth of damage.

I just recently got Cable after about 5-6 years on a modem, the change is awesome.

Just make sure if and when you get it that you can keep it,because going from Cable\DSL to 56K just sucks.

Why does everyone get only 1-5kbs (10 kbs tops) dowmloads when their card is capable of doing 56kbs?

Because it's not even close to capable of handling 56KB/s. The maximum thouroughput is somewhere around 7KB/s on a 56k modem.

That's kilobits not kilobytes. There's 8 bits in a byte, so a 56 kilobits per second modem has a max of 7 kilobytes per second. Also I think that's shared between uploading and downloading.

Just divide the speed in kilobits by 8, so my 1500k download on my DSL only gets me 187 kilobytes per second peak.

What's even worse is that the feds set the dial-up speed limit to 56k. Any idea why?

Satellite internet service is crappy for two reasons. Awfully high priced, and awfully high latency. It takes a couple of seconds for the data to get from the satellite to the dish. Therefore, gaming is virtually impossible. Regular web surfing and downloading of large files is fine, but anything that depends on low latency is going to be utter crap.
2004-03-24, 9:17 AM #28
I feel your pain Darth. I'm a gamer who has a 56k modem and is only able to connect at a maximum of 28800 Kbps. While I can play JK and DAoC (RvR is tricky with stealthers) just fine, I can't play much else. The only other time when I get to play the latest games is when I go to LANWAR or MML. I've looked in to satellite as well, and although a few people 'claim' that they're able to play MMORPG's with their connection, I still wouldn't be able to play JK or anything else. :/

If my plans don't fall through, I'll be out and in to a new place with broadband by the end of the summer though!

I never knew they did that. I was wondering what ever happened to the faster dial-up modems that were in production 4-5 years ago.

U.S Robotic's 56k modem was my only friend [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

What blows is, my max connection on that was 28,000 BPS, a week after it blew they upgraded some equipment and I got 46,000 on my crappy modem, who knows what dream speeds I would've gotten on U.S robotics [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER BUY ANY MODEM BY INTEL, They are CRAP.

whats sad is now I can't buy a new US robotics, waaaay too expensive, especially since my Phone company 'said' they're definatly geting DSL out here by the end of the year, if not may.

so I'm stuck with an intel modem thats almost dead for 2 more weeks, then I can get a slight upgrade with creative. usually anything they touch turns to gold.

Uh... I think that modems cap out at 56k because of the size of a phone cable, not a fedral regulation.
