Indeed they do - I've got a DivX player for video, and the lovely winamp for music. They new winamp does do video, but I just don't think it's right [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

It might be nice if this "sripped down version" is significantly cheaper, but I highly doubt it...

ah well

If it was, I'd get it and end up downloading Windows Media Player anyways.

Same here. I can't describe how much I hate winamp.

Media Player Classic is the best vidoe player... no arguments. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Winamp is nice for music, because it allows be to control it from within games by hitting ctrl+alt+key.

In all reality, I doubt Microsoft would stop just because Bill Gates died. I'm very sure he's got someone who asked to be on his will.
Also, I hear he's extremely rich, yes, but not the 'wealthiest' man in the world. I mean, there are some people who have more money than him, but aren't worth as much. Bill Gates is just worth that much. (That doesn't mean I envy his home) [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Some reactions to the ruling:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">The Register
The commercial software market is a very short-lived thing, and it draws its moral justification in no small part to Bill Gates 1976 letter to "hobbyists", arguing that software shouldn't be open.

The commercial software market today exists because there are many sound economic reasons for the social contract he proposed: commercial proprietary software is in many instances judged to be more attractive, or the only option: where the benefits of openness are outweighed by the assurance of support and continued development. And let's face it, we have too much choice, and Microsoft promises to make the pain of making decisions go away.

However there is the question of value, too, and much of what Microsoft now claims to do as its right - doesn't belong in the marketplace at all. It can simply be done by free software or it can be done cheaper. When a company earns over 80 per cent profit margins and sits on a $50bn cash pile, even the most technophobic customer is entitled to ask if this has been earned, or if the customer is really getting that much value for money.

"The decision by the EC will have a global impact of negative consequence," said Tom Schatz, president of CAGW, in a statement.

"In most international antitrust cases, courts will rely on precedent if a decision has been made in another jurisdiction.

"This is to ensure stability in the global marketplace. Microsoft had already reached a fair agreement in US courts that the EC should have followed.

"The EC should not be making decisions that are best left to the marketplace. Attempting to restrict the future design of software is unprecedented and has been rejected by the US courts."

You get no argument for RealPlayer, but if QuickTime sucks so badly, why do all movie studios release trailers on the internet in its format? NEVER have I run across a MediaPlayer movie trailer that was official. Surely if it sucked movie studios wouldn't use it. Correct?

I see nothing wrong with quicktime. Furthermore, it has the smoothest playback I have ever seen. If you seek, it mantains the continuity without skips or jerks. Most DVD players can't do this. Real / Windows Media definatly can't do this.

Real PLayer blows hands down, but quicktime, theres none of the pixelation or distortion. Plus expandingg dosn't distort like wmp does.
