3D Desktops?
2004-03-23, 11:28 PM #1
Anyone know any?
Linux or Windows, doesnt matter which. Preferably no crapware (spyware...adware you get my drift).
Ive tried erm...3DDesk for linux. I cant get it to work at the moment...and I dont think its really a 3D desktop is it?

And if anyone has used any..are they worth the effort?

I heard they just take up a hell-of-a lot of resources.

There was one that I installed that came with my PC Gamer mag one time. It was a very cool concept, but it lagged up the butt. And when I tried to open any programs, it'd freeze up. But maybe that was just me.

A 3D desktop came with my computer, got rid of it. Was a load of crap, didn't look very nice, and going around to open programs were annoying. Stick with the regular desktop, point and click, simple as that.

I don't like the idea of a 3d desktop but is it possible to get 3d rendered (and animated) wallpaper?

Something like the background menus in freelancer (With spinning galaxies and stuff) would be totally awsome... if it's possible.

It is possible to get animated wallpaper (load a GIF). Don't know if 3d ones can animate, but chances are, since there are 2d ones that can, 3d ones can, too.

I wonder if you could render a looping animation in Bryce and export it as something similar to a gif that windows would use. I have some pretty sweet animations that would flat out OWN as a desktop. They'd just take forver to actually render at the correct size... Right now, they're all 640x480.

In Windows you could create something animated in a webpage, and then set that page as your background using active desktop.

I never understood- what is the point of a 3d desktop? I guess it would be easier to understand if I could actually see one and really know what it's like...

Watch the movie GBK posted. The concept is actually pretty cool. Perhaps not completely practical at this point in time, but it definately has intregued me.

Do *NOT* turn on Active Dekstop. Its a stupid waste of system resources.

Looking Glass looks pretty cool. I'll definitely be giving it a look when it's available.

As for the reason for having a 3D desktop, why not? Look at your current desktop, unless you're using some very stripped down shell it is every likely that it is based around a pnemonic of 3D layouts. Some windows will be in front of others (not really the case, it's just an illusion in 2D). Your taskbar will likely have a bevel to appear 3D.

If your desktop were 3D, this pnemonic would in fact be real. The idea is to make desktop computers as representative of a real desktop as possible. You don't roll all your papers into your lap when you don't need them, you put them to one side where they are still easily accessible.

You can't use much more than .bmp's as your wallpaper unless you enable Active Desktop, at least not on Win ME (YES, YES, YES, I know it is the devil).

Isn't the new version of Windows supposed to have a totally DirectX desktop?
