Best graphics cards on the market right now?
2004-03-26, 6:50 PM #41
Recently, I updated my graphics card to a Geforce FX 5600 XT with 256 RAM. So far, the card is decent but not much of an improvement over my old Geforce4 MX. The load time is MUCH better and the FPS is much more stable... unfortunately, the speed is higher. It is the same exact FPS. It is just more stable. I solely blame this on my motherboard because it is locked at AGP 4x. I did buy a motherboard that had 8x support (and a FSB of 333, allowing me to use my new AMD Athlon XP 2500+) but unfortunately, a glitch occured with the motherboard, CPU, and the ram that caused my hard drive to malfunction and corrupted the data. No matter how many times I formatted, whenver I tried to install the os, the computer locks and corrupts the hard drive! ERRRR!!! Because of that, I was forced to return the motherboard. I also returned the RAM as well since I didn't need it (my old motherboard doesn't support DDR). I couldn't return the CPU though (which sucks because my old motherboard has a FSB of 100mhz! EERRRR!!!!!). So, in the end, I'm stuck with only a Geforce FX 5600 that can't run at full power and 200 dollars down the toilet until I'm refunded my money (except for the CPU, which is useless to me right now). As you can see, I'm not a happy camper. If that wasn't bad enough, my moniter just DIED a few days ago. GGRRRR...

No, core clocks are higher (not overclocked) and most models I believe mem speed is faster (2.0 ns??)

The XT has an overdrive feature which is basically 'official' overclocking, but it's so slight it's a bit of a joke. I wouldn't pay extra for an XT over a 256mb 9800 Pro personally....well....unless it was a very very slight cost difference.

There is no noticable difference between 4x and 8x AGP. The other things you mentioned might hold the card back, but yeah going from 4 to 8 AGP will not change a thing.
