Er.. that was odd. My post got deleted, and replaced by Pheonix's..

Opera!

www.opera.com

It's got tabbed browsing, an awesome pop-up blocker, and it's just all around good.

Opera's pretty good. Not sure if it's free or not because I got it on a CD with a PC magazine but I guess you could do a quick Google search and find out for yourself.

Opera is not free. Go with Mozilla FireFox. If you don't like it today, download an updated version tommorrow.

... Opera is free.. Legally too.

Sure, you get a single banner add, but really.. without the banner add, you get about 5 cm of viewing space back (on my res). They put it in a place where if you remove it, all that's going to be there is the background of the skin.

Opera is startlingly standards strict. I personally prefer Firefox because of its extensions and simply the fact that it is maintained by so many people.

Even without the banner add, opera seems to leave a small amount of space for the webpage itself, which annoys me.

I say go with Mozilla or Firefox.

I have my monitor at 1280x1024, and so i don't really notice any problems with the viewinf area of Opera. I like it alot. It has lots of skins you can download to personalize it, easily modified toolbars, tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, and a great pop-up blocker.

I use SlimBrowser
it's got tabbed browsing and a good popup blocker. it uses IE's engine so there's no question about compatibility.
it also has skins, groups and a number of other great features.

I am willing to concede that the mozilla rendering engine is superior to IE (mainly because it's fact not opinion), however I much prefer Internet Explorer's GUI which actually looks nice and is consistant with the rest of Windows (say it and you're banned, GBK and anyone else).

Personally i'd like to see a kind of modular approach taken to web-browers. Where you can actually download different rendering engines to plug into the browser you prefer. It'd be pretty cool being able to switch between Mozilla, Opera, IE or even Lynx on the fly.

That would be pure gold to developers, b/c you could test your pages for backwards-compatility without having to find, d/l and install the older browsers.

Um yes, Opera has been built from day one to be fairly neurotic about w3c standards. This is pro and con, pro in that it's just idealogically pleasing, con in that the vast majority of the internet has never even /heard/ of web standards and so it sometimes gags on horribly designed pages. Now IE can dealw ith them because it has some proprietary bad-html-fixer-parser-thang which they refuse to tell anyone how it does what it does. Opera has a similar sort of feature in its Quirks mode which i don't entirely understand but i think it basically softens up ie if a page doesn't have a doctype defined or something.

Opera's rendering engine is funky.

Fire Fox + SmoothWheel, RadialContext, and Tabbrowser Extensions extensions = Best browser EVER.

EVER.

plus Fire Fox has a really GREAT Popup blocker. I havnt seen an unwanted popup since I installed it.

Well, err, no, IE is just lax on its markup interpertation..

Then of course theres the plethora of sites that use IE-only web plugins, ActiveX objects, etx. But thats no real loss, as the only thing ActiveX has ever been used for is spam, spyware, and other malicious crap.

Off topic but i'd use Firefox if:-

I could use anti-aliased fonts
I could turn off the image placeholders while the images are loading. They are so ugly.
And I could move the googlebar onto the same row as the address bar.
I Could increse the speed of the scroll wheel and arrow key scrolling.
