Who knows that email worms fake the sender?

I am amazed that only a few people seem to be aware of that

I've known that its possible for as long as I can remember. It doesnt surprise me that most people dont realize it though.

Not only do they scan address books for addresses to spoof either. Some scan the source of pages in temp net files for addresses. Which is yet another reason not to put your actual email address up on a site. A good alternative is to put up javascript that pieces together the address from different parts you specified.

Deleted.

So I don't worry about it.

Viruses collect email addresses in communities. Lets say 2 email addresses appear on the same webpage... the virus assumes that because the 2 addresses are on the same page, theres a pretty good chance that the users of those 2 addresses know each other. So the virus will send 2 emails, one to each address, each of which will appear to originate from the other address.

Case in point: As of late, some virus are evening appearing to originate from the staff addresses (staff@massassi.net, etc).

Fake senders you would know means it fakes senders from your address book or people who have emailed you before basically.

I don't keep an address book.

But I'll have to look out more. 99% of my incoming mail is junk anyway, and it never gets opened.

Am I safe in comparing the sender & subject? (I mean, If a subject line was totally out of wack with something I'd expect from a certain sender.)

You're probably safe as long as you don't open the attachment. Or you could just get Norton or something.

I had to return some bad RAM today and as I was standing there the tech was installing XP on someone's comp. Almost right beside the comp he was working on, there was a pricelist for service. 'OS install - $50'. I asked how many people actually pay $50 to have an OS installed. He said that a lot of people do.
It amazes me that something so simple can't or won't be done by people. :/

Some people just dont have the right mind set to work with computers. That doesnt neccesarily mean they are less intelligent.

I did, but that's the very reason worms spread like wildfire.

Not necessarily. I've been getting a virus from someone infected on the OSC server for some time now, and I don't recognize any of the names. I tried to send an email to several of them, in case they were real addresses and the worm was just using them to tell them, and it bounced back. So it doesn't fake real addresses either.

No, it doesn't. Different people have different areas of intelligence and/or training. If a nuclear physicist doesn't know how to operate a computer very well, it doesn't make him/her unintelligent.

If a nuclear physicist can't use a computer, they are going to be out of a job...

But seriously, I assumed that most people knew that worms could fake e-mail addresses. Interestingly, I got an spam message from my own e-mail address the other day.

Well, I agree with you DS. But to install XP just seems so simple. You don't really need to dl drivers or anything. Just set the time and language. It does the rest.
