I know, I know, I'm a little late, but good DAMN does this game own. Between the teamwork tactics, and the wonderful music/ambience/feel of this game, I cannot get enough of it. The music is great--listening to the best 60's era tunes while you whittle away your enemies in a flying machine of death, aka helicopter, or just listening to ride of the valkyries while storming a base with tons of tanks....memorable at the least. Now some screenies. Both 32 person full servers.

Didn't put here because it's 1152x864x32 highest detail saved at 80% jpeg...probably kill the 56k'ers.

Also, the rumors about the M60-LAW combo are true--it PWNS. It's so dirty and cheap though, I only use it if the vietnamese are thrashing us. the M-15 is my preferred weapon. Awesome.

9/10 (SP brings it down, along with bugs.)

From what I can play, it's awesome. However, there's utterly horrible, glaring Radeon issues they obviously didn't care about before releasing it. It runs horrible no matter what settings I have it on, whereas Far Cry runs flawlessly on maximum settings. Why they decided to not support Radeons is beyond me.

I'll get into it more when the patch comes around. Hopefully that'll be soon.

Strange--my friend's ATi Radeon 9800 Pro runs it flawlessly. It's my nVidia drivers I'm having troubles with D:<

M15 eh? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I haven't played it yet, but I'm going to get it, along with Far Cry very soon.

Basically, for SP FarCry pretty much has it beat. For MP Battlefield looks to PWN it far too much.

It says in the readme that it "may have problems with certain Radeon cards." They decided not to fully support it the first time around. Take a look at the official EA boards -- nothing but people complaining about horrible framerates on high-end PCs. I'm one of them. BF:V's graphics aren't exactly something to write home about, yet it runs horrible (set everything to low, turned off sound, tried other drivers, etc...same thing) no matter what, whereas Far Cry, with its incredible graphics, lighting and physics, runs nearly perfect. Something's obviously wrong here.

Farcry can't support 64 players w/ vehicles flawlessly :P. Yah it's probably going to get a quick patch, but I dunno what to say, I'm lovin it. It may not be the cat's pajamas gfx wise, but when you factor in the massively multiplayer part, it suddenly looks a LOT better. Also, it seems to be more polygon intensive than FarCry. Ah well. Good stuff [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

[EDIT:]By flawlessly, I meant once all the bugs are ironed out. Meaning the FarCry engine isn't up for it.

Maybe Farcry can't compare in gameplay and fps, but UT2k4 sure can. I get around the same frames in BTF Vietnam with everything on low versus UT2k4 with maxed out settings...

Its not very optimized.

The game runs flawlessly on my comp. I have the following system:

Athlon XP 1800+
Radeon 9700 Pro (4.3 Cats)
512 DDR Ram

Running in 1024*768 with everything on High and these exceptions:

1) Texture Quality and Geometry on Medium
There is very little difference between Medium and High textures, but you drastically decrease the Ram usage.
2) Shadows off
3) Miles 2D sound instead of EAX (big performance boost). I also took down the channels from 64 to 32 and disabled sound occlusion.
4) Added line
Game.setSoundBufferSize 400
to Default.con in
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield Vietnam\Mods\BfVietnam\settings
5) In a Multiplayer match, I typed
pb_sleep 250
pb_writecfg
This will make punkbuster only check for cheats every 250 seconds.

Good luck!

Yah, it's a bug that it's not optimized. UT2k4 came optimized, but it still only supports 32 players...and to be honest, the vehicles begin to get old. BF:V however, 64 player max, played on a couple servers like that, the vehicles NEVER get old, and I'll be blasted if the M-15/Nade Launcher combo doesn't PWN. Also, if you get older drivers for your video card, it'll probably work better.

Gosh, I need to get a new CD-ROM drive.

I went out and bought it, but it uses SafeDisc as an anti-piracy measure (like the two earlier games I bought, Prince of Persia and FS2004). I have to resort to cracked .exe's in order to get to play the game I payed for with my own damn money (!).

It's like having to break into your new car and hotwire it in order to rightfully drive it around. Not fun.

So far, it seems quite amusing, but I'll just add another penny in the "M60/Law/M79 class is lame and needs to be nerfed" jar.

Yah, I wish they'd replace the M60 with an M-15 or something similar. Also, you DO need a new drive--if your car's ignition won't start, then of course you have to hotwire it :P

Khe Sanh. 10 NVA vs. 16 US, eleven of which were using the M60 pack. We beat them reaaally well. Leaving tunnel by their airbase = constant harassment to silly planecampers. Cornering their final spawn point and pumping salvo after devastating salvo of mortars into their final outpost = pure bliss. We won by over 200 points [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] .

For those who are considering buying the game, I'd advise you to hold off until a good rebalancing patch comes around. The M60 pack is a serious balance issue (you know it is when you get matches with seven more players on one team, where 80% of them are using the same damn class...). The "jumping back and forth within the Cobra to launch a heatseeker at a plane" exploit also really sucks.

EA should sack their playtesters. The M60 has the same rate of fire as the stationary MG42's in BF1942 (a distinct *BRRRRRRT!* instead of the real 550rpm), with no overheating, and as accurate while running and jumping along as any SMG(!). In addition, they usually pick the LAW (or five of them, to be precise), and unlike BF1942, the AT-Rockets in this game have no deviation . Stick to Eve of Destruction for a more refined experience.

Otherwise it's all good fun. Very pretty game, very amusing if you can find a server with autobalance that isn't filled with idiots. Here's a screenshot I "took" of the battlefield. Unmodified and uncensored.

There is a US Anti-Armor class that gets a LAW as well as an M60, which is to say that they are Gods of Destruction. Since the "on foot" gameplay has always been of a very high lethality index in this series, there's no reason not to just take this class every time and act as the agent of divine retribution. Between your disposable rocket launcher and your heavy machinegun, you represent a buffet of death that is open twenty-four hours a day.</font>
